T o.th e Growers oí Fruit.
E ditor H e ral d :
In my second
article I spoke of pruning apple
trees, and as the time is at hand to
do the work, 1 shall remind the
small-fruit growers of taking up the
necessary pruning of all small fruit,
such as goose berries, raspberries
and others of this kind, and also
currants. Top all your berry plants
heavy, and traiii pipes or Btems
where you wish them to grow and
tie them to stay; have ail last year’s
growth removed and dead leaves
and litter cleaned up from under
your plants and refuse burned.
Never allow such to lay around
and produce fungus diseases or
harbor insects. Currants and oth
er berries over run by small green
worms should be sprayed
with
white hellebore. Take otie large
table B]>oonful of hellebore dissolved
in two and one half gallous o f water;
spray just before bloom ing and
again after fruit has set. Straw
berries should be worked and clean
ed before grow ing begins in the
spring of grass and week roots mat
ted with the strawberry roots,
should you neglect .to work them
in time you will injure your plants
to such an extent that your crop
will be greatly reduced.
