The meeting of the Coquille Edu
cational League held on Friday waa
pronounced the banner one of the
year, there being over ninety in at-
tsndaDce. The musical part of the
program was a very enjoyable fea
ture. Two numbers were furnished
by the high school pupils as follows:
piano solo; Miss Maggie Hanly;
vocal solo; Miss Hattie Sweet.
Mrs. Bourne and her little six year
old daughter rendered a piano daet
after which the child sang and play
ed alone, showing marked talent
and skill in one so young.

W . H. Bunch, so well known among
us presented bis subject in his us
ual interesting and instructive man
ner. In bis discussion of the value
of a higher education he gave num
erous statistics concerning what
such learning is worth viewed from
a commercial stand point sb well,
He further contrasted the oppor
tunities for acquiring a higher edu
cation during his early experience
in the school work of the County,
with those o f the present day, show
ing that marked advancement has
been made. "W e are not, however"
he said, “ to be content with what
has keen achieved, but must offer
better facilities in order to meet the
demands of the times.”

Lewis Elwin Gage, son of 0 . A.
and Mary Gage, waa born in this
eity November 2, 1900. and depart,
ed this life January 17, 1908, being
at the time of his death, 7 years, 2
months and 15 days of age. Little
Elwin was in many respects a re
markable child, and though his
span of life was very short, he had
endeared himself to a host of friends
who will greatly mourn his loss.
He waa of a kindly, gentle disposi
tion, and hia little heart went out
in tender and loving sympathy to all
who were in any way afflicted or un
fortunate. He was always ready to
champion the cause of the weak.
He bad been a member of the Sun.

South, for several years, and be had
a warm love for it and for his little
classmates.
He always spoke of
the ohurch as “ his church,” and was
always ready to do what he could.
Many will remember the part he
took in the Christmas exercises, and
bow well he acquitted himself in the
part assigned him.
He waa sick about 18 or 20 days,
and part of this time his sufferings
were very intense, but through |t
all he wasjpatient and uncomplain
ing. He was unconscious for a week
or more before he died, but just be
fore he lost consciousness he said
to his loving and grief-stricken par
ents: “ Papa, Mama, stay by me,”
and most faithfully did they obey
this injunction, doing all that mor
tal power could do to save the life
so dear to them.
Farewell; dear little Elwin, you
have gone from us, but we know
where to And jo u , for the loving
Christ who died for us all said:
“ Suffer the children to come unto
me, for of such is the kiogdom of
Heaven."
T is hard to giye up our darlings,
but God knows what is best for us,
and were it not that we “ see trough
a glass darkly," many a bitter tear
whold remain forever unshed.
Father, mother ,the chain is not
broken, only another link is hidden
from sight, and that is in G od’s
hand, and God is always near His
children; and while your tears pay
affection's tribute, let notes of
praise go up from your hearts, that
the angels, too, know and love little
Elwin.
The funeral services were con
ducted from the M. E Church,
South, at 1:30 p. m. January 19tb,
from whence the little body was
taken to the Masonic cemetery, and
there laid to rest, followed by
large concourse of relatives and
friends.
