taught to work aDd not to scheme
and steal from his neighbors.
Now, my readers, don’t under,
stand me to be in favor of child
labor fer one moment. I am op
posed to child labor outside of the
home, but where the child does
leave home it should be fitted for
some kind of useful work for which
it cares. Love of work and a know!
edge of how to perform it should
be more heartily encouraged in
American homes. The child is too
often allowed to drift away in fif
teen or twenty years of idleness and
then thrust out in the world to
shift for itself wholly unprepared
to meet the requirements of a cold
and selfish business society, regard
ed Bs being a high civilization, but
not the place for one not skilled or
possessing a fortune and a business
education to manage it.
You need not shed a tear or utter
a groan after your child is mixed
up in trouble or sent to the place
of punishment; it is too late. Don’t
rail against a bad government or a
set of officers who have made the
arrest for bad conduct.
