Coquille Jerald. WEDNESDAY, DEC. 11. 1907. The management of the Portland Oregonian, the most widely circu lated and by far the most Btrongly edited and influential paper pub lished in the Northwest, has an- n< 1 that the paper will not in thi' s it has been in the past, 1 n ictly Republican paper, but that independent lines will be folio", ts political policies in the i'ufu The Oregonian has been a leading factor in the Repub lican i of Oregon for many years, and v.ill be greatlv missed by the pari' -dors, however there is a spirit dependence which has taken hold of the people o f the country in the past few years which seem- to li;<\ ; reatly reduced the demand for the “ red-hot’’ partisan political paper. Voters are becom ing so independent that parties will be compelled to place clean, com petent men in nomination and run them on their merits. This has been very noticeable in Coos county for some years. J. L. C. Smith, of Los An California, w s b in Coquille last Sat urday on his return from Curry county where he had spent some time in prospecting and doing some developement work upon claims owned by himself and a few friends. The old gentleman is higbiy pleased with the prospects and what they have been able to uncover so far. lie had with him some specimens of quartz which showed to be very rich, and he is absolutely confident as to tbe existence of large quanti ties of the oer in tbe ledge. While Mr. Smith is well up in jears, and wag so unfortunate as to lose bis good right arm in the battle of Shi loh during the late unpleasantness in this country, be is a man with indomitable will and recognizes the truthfulness of the old addage “ where there is u will there is a way.” He tells! us that while he has but a left hand with which to work, he can make wages breaking up and working the quartz by hand. He will spend the winter below, but expects to go ahead in the spring with the developement work, and in due time will have a force of men to work and appliances for the proper working of the ore. He being a man of forty years’ experience in nr wo feel confident that his has not misled him, and tint tb volopment of a good and well-pa it"' property is sure to crown hi efforts. The subject of Athletic Sports, Friday morning tho high school was entertained by the first pro gram of the “ Society of The Six teen,” an organization of the tenth grade. The following program, which was enjoyed by all, was very well rendered. Song, “ Oregon, My Oregon.” was presented by Dr. Richmond in a very interesting and instructive manner. He asserted that tbe ma jority of human ills are due either directly or indirectly to lack of proper physical exercise. Football, basket ball, and swimming were mentioned as excellent sports. Tbe speaker went on to show that in playing a good clean game, say of ball, for instance, the mental and moral powers are developed, as well as the physical. Another import ant paint made was that since there is a certain amount of muscular en ergy in (he young, which must find an outlet in some way, if this same energy caD be directed into a safe channel, good may result from it rather than evil. The remainder of the time was given up to a discus sion of the topic. Prof. Daring spoke of the Athlet ic Organization which has been formed in the upper grades and of what they hope to accomplish dur ing the year. The time for adjourn ment came altogether too soon, mak ing those present feel that an hour and a half more might have been profitably spent on the subject.
