The
E du ca tion a l Leagne
The Coquille Educational League
met Friday with the presidnt Mrs.
Inez R. Chase in the chair
Alter roll and the reading oi the
minutes, the following progran was
rendered;
Recitation— Fred Roach.
Instrumental Duet, Ula Price and
Edna Gilkey.
Mr. Barrow next addressed the
teachers and parents and endeavr
ed to impress upon all,the thought
that certain restrictons and re
gulations are absolutely necessary
the welfare o f the school, and the
proper training of our boys and
girls.
He noted the failure to do good
school work as a result of keeping
late hours, and the consequent rul
ing of the board prohibiting pupils
frequenting places of amusement,
excepting on Friday or Saturday
evenings.
He urged that one and all would
feel it a duty to assist in enforcing
the town ordinance forbidding
young children congregating o n ^ e
streets after seven o'clock, and that
all must assist in the enforcement of
the new truancy law, or lay them,
selves liable to punishment.
In brief, he urged that public
sentiment must be strong enough
tc wipe out many of the evils
that are tending to ruin our
boys and girls.
Prof. Daring made some excel
lent remarks along the same line and
urged the townspeaple to cooperate
with the teachers in seeing that the
pupils conduct themselves properly
on the streets.
The evil effects,upon the young,
of certain free street shows, or en.
tertainments, wore discussed, and a
committee appointed to petition the
council that the same be excluded
from the town, in the future.
There were forty in attendance
and its to be hoped that even more
may be present at the next meeting.

The W o m a n s' S tu d y Club.
The work planned for the last
meeting of the Study Club proved
interesting including as it did, biog
raphies of the poets Shelley and
Keats, comparison of their styles
of writing and the reading of selec
tions, from the most conspicious of
their poems.
After the regular, literary work
of the afternoon came the discuss
ion of current events. The names of
proposed new members handed in
the previous week, being those of
Mrs. Rogers and Miss Anna Dud
ley were accepted, and that of Mrs.
Nye submitted, to be voted on at
the next meeting of the executive
board.
Next Saturday, being Travel Day,
the clob will take for its subject,
“ Australia” from various points of
view, meeting for the purpose with
Mrs. Gould.
As business picks up around town,
every body seems to vie with his
neighbor in cleaning up and improv
ing his property. Wm. Rohm has
now a tine residence on Prospect
bill and will move into it in a few
days.
