4 Oregon Coquille Herald. WEDNESDAY, JULY 3, 1807. The great difficulties in getting a market and proper returns for our apples and pears have caused a great laxity in interest in these in dustries, and many orchards have been neglected and do not grow as much nor as nice fruit as they did years ago. This is a burning shame and a remedy should be sought at once. There is no branch of in- dusty being pursued in the county that gives the returns that the raising of apples and pears would do under proper conditions, and we belieye these conditions can be brought about for this year’s crop if properly looked into. We are in possession of a letter in which these words are used: " I want to find out all' about the apple and pear crop of the Coos Bay country possible; where the most apples are raised in that sec tion, about what they can be bought for per ton, and about how many hundred tons a person could likely buy up there in the course of a sea son. The same thing in regard to the pear crop, if there are many grown there, where looated, what varieties and about how many hun dred tons one could possibly find if he were to go into that section,” We have the aseuranoe that the writer is a practical fruit grower, as well as a reliable packer and shipper, and that he will come here and take the fruit in bulk, relieving the grower of all the trouble of packing and marketing, the two points upon whioh all trouble and losses heretofore have hanged, and it seems to us that considerable en couragement should be given the inquirer, and the H h u l d would be glad to reoeive from every apple and pear grower of the oounty an esti mate of his crop that he would be willing to contract with this gentle man, to drop us a line, giving an estimate of his crop as early as pos sible so that he may be informed as to what he may expect to do this year. There is no doubt that if the proper understanding could be brought about between our people who have orchards and an honest and reliable dealer in San Franoisco or Portland, that the quantity of marketable fruit grown by them would double in one year’s time, and the number of trees planted would soon do the same, while the care and attention paid to trees al ready being grown would soon give the orchards of the county an entire ly different appearance. Entries Flood Roseburg Office. Congestion of timber land and homestead entries in the United* States Land Office at Roseburg has grown Jfrom bad to worse. Six weeks ago when special inspector N. J. O’Brien arrived here from Denver for the announced purpose of assisting to relieve this conges tion, there were on file in the land office 850 estríes. Thursday morn ing when Inspector O'Brien left for Oakland, Cal., pursuant to a transfer order form the Interior De partment at Washington, there were on file 926 entries, an increase of 75. J. M, Lawrence, reoeiver of the land office, says there is no im mediate relief in sight, as the Inter ior Department has made no povi- sion for extra clerks needed to clear away the held-up entries.—Times. --• -- League — Judge Hall’s court was occupied Monday and yesterday with a case in which C. S. Andrews, of this city, and Miss Ross Ferry, o f River ton, were the oontestants, and the care and oustody of the 10-year-old daughter of Mr. Andrews the cause of the contention. It was claimed that Mr. Andrews was not the prop er person to raise the child, its mother being dead, but the jury did not see it that way. A N ew N osler-M cPhail Nuptials. Notes About Apples and Pears. — ■ Development Hon. James R Garfield, Secretary of the Interior, and party, will spend Saturday, July 12th, in Portland. They will be guests of Dr. Henry Waldo Coe for a drive over the city and luncheon at his residence and for a banquet at the Commer cial Club in the evening. All Oregon is indebted to Mr. A. L. Craig, Passenger Traffic Man ager of the Great Northern Railway, for publicity given this state in many o f the leading papers of the country, including those of New York, 8t. Louis, and other great cities. Mr. Craig feels that that $5000 prize offer of the Portland Commercial Club should result in an enormous advertisement for the state. Vice President Fairbank, will be the guest of the Astoria Chamber of Commerce July 15th with ban quet at Seaside. Portland Business Men have in contemplation an excursion cover ing about twenty-five points in Northwestern Oregon and Western Washington July 24th-28th. A very pretty wedding was sol* emnized at the home of Mrs. M. Nosier in this city on Wednesday evening, June 26th, in which M. Earl Nosier and Miss Hazel £ . Mc- Pbail were united In marriage. At exactly 9 o’clock the happy couple marched to the beautiful strains of Mendelssohns Wedding March played by Miss Esther Boyd, to the parlor where the beautiful and solemn ceremony administered by the Rev. H. L. Ford, of Myrtle Point, made them husband and wife, While the ceremony was being ad ministered, Miss Boyd sang in her sweet soft voice the song, “Oh! Promise Me.” After congratula tions were over Mr. and Mrs. M. Earl Nosier led the way to the din ing room followed by the twenty in vited guests, where a table long to be remembered, was spread and where the happy crowd did honor. The young couple received many beautiful and expensive presents consisting of silver, cut glass and hand painted china. The groom is a native son of Goos county and is well known throughout this section, while the bride has only lived here a few years, having come here from Cali fornia, but has made many friends during the time she has lived among us.
