Howw softened our hearts beoome
as Xmas draws riigh, how prone to
look with compassion on the world,
as lime heralds the coming of the
day.
For o f all days, that in
which the birth of that one perfect
man‘ uppears, speaks out to all man.
kind.
That self must not be cen
tered so much on self, F it would
widen out its nature unto others;
to reach the reaping of that benefit,
o f greater and more lasting worth.
The seer within the father, looking
at his infant son, sees in the shades
o f life, the depths oi their dark
shadows, while to her who brought
him forth remains the clinging
faith that Hope, her star, will show
the path her boy must some day
tread; and by its light help him
steer clear of stumbling places
which might mean his fall.
Far
into the night, robbing sleep o f its
lorgetfulnes, sit mothers nimbly
dressing dolls, or with the fathers
planning in mysterious way, the
welcome they should give to Santa
Claus.
At Aberdeen I met one o f the
mothers in sore distress, and the
plaint of her lamentations was that
as this town had not yet gained
postal regulations from our gov
ernment through on the map. She
feared unless immediate action be
taken the children’s friend would
ignorantly pass us by.
By wireless communication we
succeeded in reaching him and he
commissioned me to act, an honor
I looked net for and dreaded lo
take, yet took with great misgivings,
for I am not a perfect man to wear
old Chriss’ mantle, who personifies
goodness itself; but then who would
dare refuse a mandate given by
such authority? Not I, though some
thing of a coward by nature; there
fore it was settled that all should
act in unison. More than odb night
did I awake, through stress of
trouble on my brain, about the
thoughts that dear old Santa Claus
would like me use to his children
for him.
My rest was broken aud
thoughts of failure well nigh drove
me me mad, rh solace would not
come to me, until the lighting of
my pipe.
Then did I dream in
peace the balauce of the night away.
At last Ibe night arrived, such a
one ae perhaps greeted tbs Msgis,
when they made that memorable
journey with offerings to the Child
whom we all reverence.
Above, the canopy of heaveD

far beyond the fathoming cf mind
to follow; and which if it did liDger
long upon, made its possessor seem
illiraitesly small. The stars in con
stellations glittered, shedding with
in this space a softened light which
such vast distance made appear to
mortal eyes like diamonds of price

known richness and of wealth so

were entitled to, missing none,
for in hie eyes the human family is
one vast kindergarten, which in
fatherly manner he must handle
well.
As the gifts were given the puls-
iug hearts of little ones assumed
more normal heatings for there had
been much palpatation prior to that
time.
Then as the flight of time
us that parting of our friend was
near, be was lead again into the
night to go his way.
It was indeed a pleasant gather
ing of little ones and older ones
who, for the time cast care aside,
to let the better part of self have
sway, that they might carry with
them remembrance of the Yule-tide
in their lives.

Congress has been losing valuable
time during the long holidays ad
journment The session is Bhort
enough anyway and not a few Re
presentatives have declared that the
long recess is a serious handicap to
both Houses. As the recess cuts off
eleven of the seventy-eight working
days of the session, it will be seen
that some tall hustling is necessary
between now and next March, if the
plan of work outlined at the begin-
ing is to be carried through. This
session considerable more time has
been occupied than usual in the
reading of the numerous messages
of the President, for in addition to
the regular message, which was un
usually long, these have eonsum-
med not less than three full days in
reading. Then, there has been
much time lost through putting off
until after the holiday recess, the
discussion of several important
measures, so taking things alto
gether, it is safe to predict that this
congress, like the ooe before it. Will
have the usual congestion of busi
ness at the close, when sometimes,
as many as a half a dozen of the
great appropriation bills remain un
acted upon until the very last hour
when nothing but confusion reigns
and when there is liability to grave
error. It will be remembered that
at the close of the first half of the
present Ocugress an appropriation
of three millions of dollars was
made in error through the haste to
nn end. Perhaps the proposal to do
away with the holiday adjournment,
except for a brief Christmas recess,
will strike a responsive chord with
an increased number of members
as well as with the people through
the country.

The point of view from which
the writer makes his observations
has much to do with the estimate
placed on great men as wall as great
enterprises. The sketoh of E. H.
Harriman in the current number
of the W orld’s Work, extracts from
which appear on this page, shows
the greatest railroad man the world
ever saw in the role of a self made
man who has fought his way up
from the lowest rung of the ladder.
Mr. Harriman has unquestiona
bly left a wreck-strewn wake behind
him in many of bis sensational cy
clonic movements through Wall
street, but it should not be forgot
ten that the foes who went down
before bis superior genius and spec
ulative skill were all willing to ride
into wealth and power over his
prostrate form if the opportunity
offered.
His life work discloses a rather
close adherence to the golden rule of
Dax id Harum to “ do unto others as
they do unto you, and be sure and
do it fust,” but in this he appears
to hoxe been simply adapting him
self to bis environment, Whatever
odium may attach to some of the
operations of this railroad aud
financial genius, there is much in
his career that gives the lie to that
ancient chestnut about the oppor
tunities for a young man in this
country being exhausted. For E.
H. Harriman, the man who today
controls more miles of railroad than
would be needed to circle the earth
and who has more men on his pay
roll and more millions behind him
than any other individual anywhere,
at the age of 18 was suffering all of
the pangs o f poverty that are felt
by the son of a minister whose sal
ary was woefully inadequate for the
needs of the family he was bringing
up.
Jay Gould, Daniel Drew,. Jim
Fisk, the Vanderbilts J. P. Morgan
and a host of other financial kings
were brilliant figures in the com
mercial and railroad world whon
the poor bat keen young Mr. Har
riman began struggling for a foot
hold in defiance of the admonitoo
that this country no longer offered
opportunities for a poor mao and
perhaps Ihe strsogest feature of
these remarkable conditions, which
have admitted of the growth of
such a financial Colossus, lies in
their possibilities for the future, for
somewhere iu this broud lsnd, strug
gling along and fighting herd for
a bare existence, are the Harrimans
who will take up the scepters which
the money kings < f the present gen
erations will soon lay aside.
The world has paid high tribute
to genius since the beginning of
time, and it will continue to do so
until the end, and there can be no
confusion of genius with other less
valuable traits when the possessors
can work the maricle which have
made the name Harriman famous
throughout the civilized world.—

Paris, Jan. 1.— The approaching
trial of the Vicomte Cheney and his
wife, who are accused of murder
ing their infant, is exciting the Le-
mane district. An anonymous let
ter was the means of exposing the
crime. The Viscountess has assum
ed responsibility for the crime. She
stated that her husband killed the
child because of the expense it
would entail.
