The report that tbe old idea of "reincarnation'’ has been'obosen for tbe theme of a play by a Chicago writer, ia interesting, It shows among other things bow abiding is the interest of the general public in the tbinga of the soul. These mys teries, deep as they are and forever baffling, never fail to attract and of ten to charm one is a little puzzle to understand how the author im parts dramatic movement to the metaphysical theories of Pythago- aas and the Hindoos, but it seems from the report that she has suc ceeded. Rider Haggard used the idea of re. incarnation to good purpose in his famous tale of "She.” Wordsworth alluded to it, if nothing more, in the greatest ode in the English lan guage, borrowing PI ito’s doctrine that "our birth ia but a sleep and a forgetting,” and that the soul comes to earth from a state of preexistence, “ Not in entire forgetfulness and not in utter nakedness, but training clouds of glory.” The glory fades, according to Wordsworth, as we grow older, but Plato held, or at least Socrates did, as Plato reports him, that it gets brighter aod brighter all through life. He taught that the process of “ learning” is but a remembering o f things which we have known in a previous stats of existence and partially forgotten. Hence to Soc rates teaching w u but the art of making pupils search their miuds for these dim recollections. He believe that the teacher could by skillful questions bring out the most abstruse knowledge from tbe dullest mind. He therefore called himself and by implication, all teach ers, “ midwives,” because they assist at tbe birth of knowledge from tbe sou], The idea of reincarnation is one o f tbe most abiding and vital in tbe history of religion. Shakespenre did not disdain to allude to it in. Twelfth Night. "W hat is the opin ion of Pythagoras concerning wild fowl” inquires the clown; to which unhappy Malvolio correctly replies that the great philosopher believed “ tbe soul of our grandma might happly inhabit a bird.” There is an allurement, one must confess, in the belief that the ro u I h of rnon g o after dentli into beastly or human bodies, which express their ruling passions in life; one :*>4o a hog, another in to an ass. No other creed seems quite so consonant with the de mands of exact justice.— Oregonian B ad Chinaman ia Capturad. Can’t Have Equal Rights, Yesterday morning Marshal J. W . Carter, accompanied by Qeorge Farrin, made a trip to the Chinese quarters io this city in answer to a complaint made by Chinaman Siog, in which he stated that he had been robbed of quite a bunch of wash money. Suspicion was at once directed against Yee Ming, another Celestial, who proclaimed hia innocence o f the crime. A search of Ming’s person resulted in the funding of $1(34 in United States legal tender. This be claimed was his own. Sing claimed he had been robbed o f it, and also of a certificate of deposit on the National Bank of Coquille. Search was made for the check, and it was finally found in the bottom of a sack of rice. Ming claimed that a conspircy had been formed to ruit. him, and that he knew nothing o f the certificate. Other Chinamen, state that a num ber of their countrymen bad been hitting the pipe, and while SiDg’s back was turned Ming relieved him of his money. Ming is said to have rushed out o f the room in which they were smoking, and upon returning some few minutes later he exclaimed; “ If you think I stole your money, search me.” The preliminary trial took place yesterday afternoon, Ming being bouod over to tbe circuit court on a bond of f500.— Coos Bay Times. San Francisco, Nov. 14.—Secre tary Metcalf, before leaving for Washington today, confided to a few intimate friends that the senti ment of the people of San Francia- oo, if not o f the whole state, was opposed to allowing the Japanese or Chinese children to mingle freely with tbe Caucasion children in the public schools, and that it is likely that the statute providing that tbe Asiatic children be taught in separ ate schools would be strengthened at tbe coming session of the legis lature. A sa lawyer, the secretary told tbe Call bis opinion was that the treaty with Japan that guaran teed Japanese children equal rights with children of the most favored nation, and that the provisions in the California statute is unconstitu tional, Drain Notes- The first train was run upon the Drain-Coos Bay Monday. It is to be hoped an electric light sys tem will soon be installed. A recital by Miss Johnson and Miss Hewett on Saturday was well received and appreciated by a large audience at Normal Hall.
