U l
E ditor H erald :— Before taking
up spelling as we intended in this
article, we desire to give a few more
thoughts on reading and its appli>
cation. Few persons comprehend
that correct reading is the very
basis of a good English education.
You cannot obtain a clear concep
tion nor a correct understanding of
any question, problem, or state
ment unless you read it correctly,
This applies especially to Arithme
tic, Grammar, Geography, History,
Rhetoric, and all similar studies.
In eleven years experience, I have
seen more teachers fail on their ex
amination from misreading the prob
lems and questions, tbau from any
other one cause Teachers that I
knew could solve the problem or an
swer the question, and in talking
with them afterward I almost invar
iably discovered that they had failed
to read the question so as to get its
true meaning. And one of the
greatest difficulties nearly all per
sons have to overcome is reading
too rapidly. Very few persons get
the real depth of meaning intended
to be conveyed by the writer, even
when reading our daily papers.
To be a good reader, one must be
able to put himself in the place of
tho writer, and see and feel and un
derstand. what the writer saw and
felt and understood. This is the
great art of good reading. And to
do this, one must not only hare per
fect control of his voice, but in ad
dition to the things 1 mentioned
lust week, he must have perfect con
trol of well developed breathing
organs, must be able to fill the lungs
nnd bold or expell the breath at
will, either slowly and quietly with
f jrce and power, or with explosive
force and power. He must have
good expression both as to features
and tone of voice, cloar distinct pro
nunciation, and thorough knowledge
of pitch, force, stress, tremor, quan
tity, quality, melody, cadence, pause,
movement, directness, interrogation,
aifi'poucaiiuu, luiltauon, »-Ucmkiuu,
transition, antithesis, parenthesis,
npostrophe, soliloquy, climax and
compass, with gesture and action.
Tho good reader must also under
