follow in g the shocks, which are
reported to have been more severe
than those in San Franoisco, tiros
from overturned stoves and fur
naces broke out in several parts of
the city, and a great conflagration,
similar to that which wiped out the
California city, is supposed to be
in progress. One message says por

were lost, the victims having been
caught in co'lapsed and burning
buildings.
J. A. Collier arrived at this place
on Thursday of last week with the

believed, was foully delt with at
Moscow, Idaho on the last day of
July, receiving injuries from which
he died iu a short time, and the
funerul took place day following.
Rev. W . R. F. Browne, who was in
the mountains for an outing was
telephoned for and came to conduct
the services, which were held in
the family residence where the
young mau bad spent the greater
part of his life. The spacious par
lors, hall and dining room were
crowded with sympathizing friends
during the services. The interment
took place nt the Odd Fellows'ceme
tery where his body was placed
beside that of his mother, having
been followed by a large concourse
of friends to its last resting place

Santiago De Chile, Aug. 16—
( Delayed.)— The worst earthquake
ever
remembered occurred this
evening at about eight o’clock.
Houses fell in the streets, which
were filled with hysterical people.
The clerks at the Cabinet offices
say that the telegraph lines to the
con it are severed. The
electric
lights are out, and as the corres
pondent is trying« to file this dis-
pitch the earthquake is again start
ing. He can hear the people wail
ing and praying in the streets while
the fire bells through-out the oity
are ringing out alarms.
