The Eveuing Telegram, of Port
land, of the 22nd inst., contains a
long article concerning the finding
of a complete counterfieter’s outfit
in a room of Hotel Portland, occu
pied by a woman who registered as
Mrs. Bertha E. Gordon, of North
Bend, wite of Sam Gordon, the Coos
Bay contractor.
She had been ar
rested on a telegram from San
Francisco for passing a bogus note
in that city, and the above-mention
ed articles were found in her room
later.
The U. 8 . secret service
authorities were notified, and no
doubt but she will be called up to
answer on both charges.
Some pagan philosopher once
gave utterance to the opinion that
there was nothing of interest in a
horse race, for the reason that “ any
fool knows that some horses are
faster than others." In these mod
ern days o f “ dope” it is easily ap
parent that the speed of a horse has
no special bearing on the result of a
horse race. Note, for example, the
wordy war over the Lou Dillon
scandal, and also the doping of
Huguenot at Los Angeles Monday.
If this thing continues, horse racers
will soon be regarded with the same
degree of suspicion as is now shown
toward horse traders.--Oregonian.
Falls From a Telephone

his parents on the North Fork, bad

morning of the 2drd.
Mrs. Zevely, mother of Mrs. Chas.
James, has been very ill since her
return from Coquille.
Anen Belieu fell from the top of
a telephone pole on the corner of C
an(j p ront streets Baturday morning
fracturing his breast bone and the
bones of one leg below the knee,
mashing an ankle and injuring his
back. It seems that the clasp
his safety belt gave way, letting
him fall from the pole. The cross
arm also toppled down, striking
Belieu as he lay on the ground.
He was taken to the Horsfall hos
pital, where his injuries were at
tended to. It is thought that no
internal hurt was received.
Mr.
Belieu had been in the employ of
the local office only a little more
than a week, having come here from
Myrtle Point.— Coast Mail.
Mrs. Chas. Southmayd spent sev.

Fred Chapman from Grizzly

at Coquille.
The mask ball given by the Im

fair surplus.
Owing to the high
water many were kept from attend

maskers and a jolly time.
