J, Pence, now a resident near S* ittlo, Washington, made Coos <• mt.v a visit lately for the purpose o ' look in g oyer grounds where he I id spent many pleasant days dur- i g pioneer times in this section. Mr. Pence was among the first white ■> n to arrive on the bay, having l * eu there before there was a house < f any kind except (tie wigwam or t : pe o f the Indians. However his stay was not long at that time, but l.o returned in 73, some twenty y ars later ana spent several years ■od forming the acquaintance of i. iny of our pioneer citizens, some o f whom have passed away, while 0 hers will remember him, among v bom he mentioned the late Samuel [lament, with whom as his partner, perated the first blacksmith shop in Coos county. He in company v ith the late H. P. Whitney, con ducted a butcher business on the • ay. The present trip is for the 1 urpose of looking up some mining I repositions he noticod on his for mer trips. He tells of the great ‘ port he enjoyed while here before, •rating that he had more real enjoy ment in five years spent in pioneer- ng in Coos county than is allotted lo the average mau. Obituary. Mary A. Hamblock, wife of John h Hamblock, was born in Boone county, Missouri, July 27, 1831, the daughter of William and Margaret Campbell. Her parents moved to Franklin County, Missouri, when she was quite young. She joined i he Baptist church when about .ighteen years age, and was mar ried to John F. Hamblock February 1857. To this union were born ••x children, three sons and three I'Uigbhers, all of whom ere living f'e p t one eou who died in infancy, K gene Albert died in 1808. The living children are Emma J. Mary 1'iuncis, Margaret A , John Vinton, ai d Eugene Henry. She moved bom Franklin County, Missouri, to Cons county, Oiogou, where she lived until she died, October 25, 1905, aged 74 yearn anil th ree months. The funeral took place at this place on Friday, Octobor 27, and interment in the Odd Fellows’ cem etery. Senator Folton’a Vielt. Senator Fulton, o f Astoria, made Coos county a visit coming down on the last Alliance, and returning by the same boat. This was the Senator’s first visit to this part of the state, and he expressed himself as being very much surprised as well as highly pleased with our county. Owing to the fact that Senator Fu) on is likely to bo our only repre ntative in Congress next session, he felt it a duty to acquaint himself with our needs, etc., and his visit was for that pur pose. He examined our harbors and took notes as to what recommenda tions should be made to congress. On Saturday evening the Senator spoke from the bandstand to large and enthusiastic crowd. After the speaking a grand banquet was given at Hotel Ocquille which was heartily enjoyed by a number of our citizens.
