Coquille Herald. WEDNESDAY, OCT. ‘¿ 5, 1905. Our Salm on Industry. We hear many ideas expressed by fishermen and others in regard to our new fish laws, some taking a stand against such restrictions, which is certainly against our views. It will be remembered that in pio neer days when salmon by the mil lions were allowed to go at will up the streams to spawn that all our bays and rivers were a living mass of fish. It will be remembered by a few how Capt. Backus, who was the chief workman on the old Pan- ter mill, got vexed at a hand ax with which he was working one day and threw it from the roof of the building into the river, and so thick were the salmon that three were killed by the single blow. In later years when all fished at will, with all kinds of nets and seins, they were reduced to that extent that they were thought almost destroyed, they being so scarce that it did not justify ruuning the canneries. Since then with certain restrictions as to the size o f mesh allowed in seins, giving one day off in each week, etc., there was in due time a remarkable increase in the run each year. And now, since the govern ment has taken the matter in hand and well-regulated hatcheries are being established and maintained, still greater will this increase prove. Deputy Warden Smith who was over from the bay lately informed us that the bay 'Was getting a lar ge run and that the prospects were good for u profitable season for all engaging in tho business, the boats at that time were averaging 2000 pounds p er night. This, however, has d ropped off greatly on account of the rains ceasing. There is no question but if we should get some heavy rains that would Hwell the stream s, the rune in the bay and river liuth would soon be up In tb eirfn n n cr n-itch Mr. Smith also informed us that since the hatchery on the bay was established, thnt but two former seasons would have been effected bv the artificially bntched fish, and these two seasons were comparative ly experiments, and that but a few thousand young fish were success fully and properly "planted,” but that since those seasons the num bers have run into the millions and that in futuro seasons the increase should be more marked. Raymond pro duced all manner of birds and ani mals apparently from the atmo sphere. He lighted a cigar from bis wife’s red hair, and then blew the smoke through a solid glass vase. He hatched two eggs into dovos in sight of the audience, but when be took a pig from a bottle that be used in serving all manner of drinks to the audience, the crowd screamed with delight, much to the discomforture of those who bad partaken o f the beverages. Raymond is a great magician. YOU T A K E NO C H A N C E ..When You Buy Here.. G. T. Well«* ‘ Defendant ) TO G. T.
