R ussians Coming Senses. to Their St. Petersburg, Aug. 10.— Upon receiving a message from SV itte to the effect that Komura is uncom promising on the subjects of the cession of Saghalien and reimburse ment for war expenses, the Czar summoned the members of the Na tional Defense Council. The Grand Duke Nicholas admit ted the impossibility of retaking the island or defending the Amur re gion, and counseled compromise. All adhered to this opinion. Linevitcb, being asked for his views, telegraphed that he was un able to spare troops to defend the Amur region, and that he was not strong enough to take the offensive against Oyama. Thereupon, the Czar telegraphed to Witte to be more tractablo. Goes to San Francisco. Farmers' Institute. Louis Jerome Simpson, the saga cious and enterprising manager, who has conducted the affairs of the Simpson Lumber Company on the bay the past several years, has been called to aconpt a position in the company’s head office at Ban Fran cisco, releivmg his father, Captain A. M. Sim|'sou, of many of the du ties inoumoent upon him, wbioh multiplying years have caused to be quito arduous on the head of this great lumber firm. The vacancy at North Bend is to be filled by M. C. Griswold, an eastern mill man and late of Portland. Mr. Simpson will remain on tho bay several months yet instructing bis successor as to the ins and outs of the business. Though Mr. Simpson will make San Francisco bis headquarters, he has not forsaken Coos Bay and hiB guiding hand will help shape the future destiny of the great indus tries he has established at at North Bend to the general betterment of all concerned.— Marshfield Sun.
