St. Louis, July 30.— Luther Bur­
bank, the famous Californian horti­
culturist, declares that the great ob­
ject and aim of his lite is to apply
to the training of children those
scientific ideas which be has so suc­
cessfully employed in working mi­
raculous transformations in plant
life.
This phase of the great natural­
ist's character, hitherto kept secret
from the world at large, was re­
vealed in n recent interview with
Rev. Dr. James W. Lee, pastor of
St. John’s Southern Methodist
Church, who returned yesterday
from a trip to Santa Rosa, Califor­
nia, whither he went for an inter­
view with Mr Burbank.
Dr. Lee says that Burbank has
2500 visitors a year, but he does not
see more than one-fifth of them.
“ My time is worth $2.50 an hour,”
Mr. Burbank said to Dr. Lee.
The clergyman told Mr Burbank
that he had referred to the latter’s
work in an address at Portland and
had expressed the wish that he
might introduce into the method of
rearing children some of the scien­
tific ideas that Mr. Burbank was
applying every day to the improve­
ment of plants. Dr. Lee says that
Mr. Burbank's eyes immediately
flashed and he replied: “ That is
the great object and aim of my life.’,

Drain, Oregon, Aug. 1.—Specula­
tion has been rife here during the
past week as to what the appearance
of an engineer’ outfit at this, place
means. This outfit, consisting of
four cars, was side tracked here
about a week ago and two men
have it in charge. These men arr
only employees of the crew and
claim not to know the purpose they
have been sent here for. Two others
came today but the chief engineer
has not yet put in an appearance,
but those here say that they expect
the balance of the crew on any train
from the south. Several large tents
for the use of the gang came in by
freight a couple of days ago, so it is
evident that they expect to work
away from the main line of the S.
P. R. R. Co. They are, without
question, in the employ of the S. P.
Co. The belief is general here that
they are to work on the line toward
the coast, but the kind of work to
be done remains, as yet, a mystery.
Mr. C. D. Drain, who was over
