On the steamer Elizabeth which
is due soon will arrive the boiler
and engine and other machinery for
the mine recently bought of J. A.
Peart by Mr. firaddock, which will
put in place and the mine put into
operation as rapidly as possible.
This mine has been on the stand*
still ever since the death of Mr.
Christee which occurred on Febru.
ary 3rd, by being run over by the
cars at this place. This mine has
been run long enough to prove con
clusively that it is no experiment,
the quality of the coal being good
and the vein large enough to pay
well. The opening of this mine re
establishes one of our important in
dustries which will add materially
to the payrole of our city. Mr.
Tawse, the former foreman, informs
us that it will be but a short job to
put the mine on a working basis
again.
There were celebrations at Ban-
don, Myrtle

Marshfield,
Gravel Ford and Riverton and a
nice little picnic at Coquille, each
and all furnishing amusement for
goodly crowds. At Marshfield an
immense throng were in attendance

At Myrtle Point a good program
was carried out in good shape. Hon.

this occasion was furnished by the

Armistice Rests
W ith Japan
8t. Petersburg, July 3.— Negotia
tions for an armistic between the
armies o f Russia and Japan, it can
be definitely stated, are not in pro
gress, presumably at Washington;
but they have not reached a stage
where any further announcement
can be made.
The decision seems to rest with
Japan, which country is weighing
the relinquishment of the prospects
o f bettering her present advanta
geous position against the enormous
cost in lives and money of another
great battle.
The chances for a decisive and
final Japanese victory, it is believed
here, are no better than before Lio
Yang and Mukden, and it is point
ed out that it is idle to talk of Vlad
ivostok falling like a ripe apple into
Japao's hands before the peace con
ference meets.
