Clover Best for Berries
The use of clover as s green fertiliser
crop in strawberry cultivation is advo
cated in a bulletin issued by the Oregon
Agricultural college. Ths advice is bas
ed on the result of tests in the upper
Hood River valley by Gordon G. Brown,
horticulturist. Hood River branch ex,
périment station. The test, which cov
ered a period of three yean, was made
in so-called red-shot soil.
As a general conclusion the evidence
in favor of tjie use of clover as a green
manure crop is very clear in that yields
■re greatly increased even on virgin
soils and secured cheaply in that the
need of additional fertilizer is relatively
Still further ineresses ih (yields sre
possible by the addition of commercial
fertiliser, such as nitrates, which has
given greatest gains.
While large in
creases may be secured through com
mercial fertilisers without the use of
clover, there is little evidence, says the
bulletin, to support the idea that yields
will compare favorably with those where
clover and alfalfa manure are used as
a basis.
The strawberry does its best when
furnished an abundance of moisture,
especially during the harvesting season.
In the use of nitrate, moderation is
urged.—Oregon Journal.

A man in good physical condition 1s
almost certain to enjoy life, while the
bilious and dyspeptic are despondent,
do not enjoy their meals and feel mis
erable a good sliare of thé time. This
ill feeling is nearly always unneces
sary. A few doses of Chamberlain’s
Tablets to tone up the stomach, im
prove the digestion and regulate the
bowels is all that is needed. Try It.
