Here April 26 and 26. . inscrutable were the ways o f provi dence in removing in the full prime of life such sterling citizens and perma nent taxpayers, or how an apprecia tive public ought to chip in for a mon ument for each o f them. It seems to have been Joab’s custom to soft-soap his victims before he killed them, not afterward. Not so the Portland news paper with the'country press. Last fall it shook its sword in plain view, frowned horribly, called them grafters and not till then smote them in the fifth rib. Joab at least had the cour age of his, convictions. He never, like the Portland newspaper, implied, the least sorrow for his foul deeds. “ It is observed that several other newspapers reject the late genlte over tures o f the Portland evening paper, among them the Hillsboro Indepen dent and the Medford Mail-Tribune. As encouragement to study the too- often neglected scriptures we now propose that all engage in a careful search for a closer biblical compari son than the redoubtable yet treacher ous Joab.” Turned Down a Million The Merriman Baptist Church of Ranger, Texas, although consisting of only twenty-nine members is con fronted by or most unique problem. It derives a big income from oil wells drilled on its lands; and is now fight ing hard to keep from receiving a mil lion dollars. That is what it is offer ed for the lease o f its cemetery for oil purposes, and some of the mem bers want to fake it, but the majority are emphatic in refusing it. In view of the fact that the oil on its land will soon be exhausted by wells drilled around the edge of the cemetery, H seems a short-sighted policy to refuse the million, especially aa a very small part of it would buy less desirable ground for a new cemetery and pro vide for the removal o f those laid away in the old one. That they would make no objection to the change is certain. High School Party The sixteenth, birthday o f Samuel Arnold offered occasion for a very de lightful surprise party given him by the Junior Class o f the High School on Friday night. With their arms loaded with "oats” sixteen boys and girls met at the school and from there want to the Arnold home. The evening was spent in playing and in singing songs around a comp fire. Early in the evening a lovely luncheon was served by the girls, and at the same time the but ton and penny in the birthday cake foretold the unhappy lot o f Fred Hgr- locker and the brilliant future of Samuel Arnold. About eleven-thirty the jolly crowd departed, hoping that Samuel would have another birthday which they might celebrate as Seniors. The students present on the occasion were: Pauline Chase, Effie Floten, Ida Oerding, Marjorie Hazard, Helen Sherwood, Maxine McGilvery, Chrys- tal Lafferty, Frances Medley, Londy Church, William Oerding, Fred Har- locker, Lowell Simpson, Everett Fraadricks, John Oerding, Samuel Arnold and Miss Mary O’Farrell.
