It echoes along the sides o f the rocky cliffs, is caught up and carried on and on until it strikes against the sides o f H ack moountain and eomeo re-echoing back down the gorge. The songs e f birds cease. W ith excited duckings the old pheas ant gathers her y oung about her hnd starts fo r the thicket. The rabbit scurries fa r cover. A small fawn which had been on the point e f stop ping forth from the woods, holts, quivering with fear, R slinks from sigh t in the dark,depths o f the fo r est. Only the who*, whoo o f the ruffled grouse breaks the silenco. Big Horn, the hugest buck on the Siski you range, making his way down the mountain side fo r his morning drink at the cool spring, stopped stock Still as the panther’s cry echoed up the gorge. Standing at the edge o f a lit tle cl oaring he dolicatdy sniffed the air. Could it be that this ancient fee o f his was lying in wait fo r him in the dark receesce o f the canyon T Suddenly he stiffened. Every muscle grow tends. The scent that raachad his nostrils was not that o f his foe. It was the scent o f burning cedar. That meant but one thing. The hunt ers from the city were back again. Every year they came. "B ig Horn” heard the sicken ing thud o f the bullets as thoy struck his m a ts. Late that night ha sneak ed back to the spot and up to within a few gards o f tho hunters’ camp Area. He beheld U m fllH roasting Ml his mate’s ribs over the Are. Then end there, “ Big Horn” vowed he would never be treated in that manner. From then on the hunter* who had flighted him became sa fer fo r his heed of horns. Ever since then he hnd to exert every bit o f hie skilled training to keep from fallin g a victim to the wily hunter. And new here they were back again. And the nerve o f it! T lcy were camped on hit very feeding grounds. Drinking from the vary spring, where fo r yoars he hod never let a morning paaa without dipping his velvet nose in the cool water.
