The logs have been bought and as soon as they ar rive the mill will begin operation. Word was received here this week th at Grandma Lee died in SpAngfield Sunday, April 14, a t the home of her son, Elmer. She waa buried In Cot tage Grove. Mrs. Lae had lived in Myrtle Point for several years and was loved by everyone. It was only a short time ago that her husband died. Mr. and Mrs. H arry B. Black were Marshfield passengers Sunday. The W. R. Smith family spent Sun day in low ers. Noble O. Herring, a Southern Paci fic plumber, who has been installing toilets in the local depot, left for Portland Monday morning. On last Friday evening the Coos County Declamatory-Oratorical Con test was held in the Christian Church in this place. Representatives, from every high school in the county were present to take part. The girls of the county took part in the Declamatory and the boys in the Oratorical Con test. The forepart of the evening waa devoted to the Declamatory divi sion. All of the young ladies were very closely contested and this made it very dilficult for the decision, to be rightly made. Miss Marvel Skeels, of Coquille, eras declared the winner and as a result Coquille gets the for the last two yoara. Tha Oratori cal Contest waa more one-sided, Myr tle Point’s representative, Lyle Nos ier, easily won tha decision. His piece, “Sparticns to the Gladiators," was delivered in such n way as to make anyone proud. A fter the con test the staunch M. P. H. S. support ers gathered in n car and with vari ous high school yells informed the Myrtle Point citisena that we had won. Mr, C. W. Boetticher, superin tendent of the Albany City schools, acted as judge. Before opening the exercises s four-minute speech for the Liberty Bond drive was mad by A t torney Frank Pierson. M yrtle Point teemed simply "full and running over” with soldiers Wed nesday evening when the Home Guards drilled for the first time in their new uniforms which were re ceived Tuesday. The Guards are pro gressing very rapidly in their drill. They are now divided into squads and -the various officers have been appoint ed by Captain Tonney. Sunday afternoon a carload of young “couples” drove to Broad bent. Monday morning Dr. and Mrs. J. L. Masson and Miss Erma O’Conner drove to Arago to convey Miss Jame son to the Arago school where she is teaching. W. L. Cassidy, of Portland, is very ill at the Guerin Hotel. Miss Genevieve Stinson is very OI with measles, her condition requiring the attendance of a trained nurse. Her parents were called in from the Max Dement ranch to be with her. Wednesday evening Oliver Clarke fell and cut his lip quite severely. Dr. Pemberton informs us that the critical condition of Maurice Dement is much improved. The oldest son of S. A. Pulford is vary ill with measles and pneumonia. Dr. Pemberton is attending him. Dr. Clarks went to Bridge Tuesday to see his patient, Rpy Brown, who is quite ill with the measles.
