Squad Leader, S/Sgt. Armored Infantry Co. Served in
3rd Army in France and Germany. Remembers the break
out of the Battle of Bulge and the liberation of displaced
people in the labor camps.

Aircraft maintenance in the North Island, Sail Diego.
The absolute frustration! I worked at Lockheed building
airplanes and could have been deferred but thought I
should enlist and defend my country and see some of the
world. When they found out what I could do they stuck me
on North Island out of San Diego doing the exact same job
as Lockheed - at a fraction of the pay for the duration!!.

Army Nurse. Served all over Texas, El Paso, San
Antonio, Waco, Fort Worth, and Selina, Kansas. Recall
going down to the runway to welcome the military
planes (carrying our prisoners of war and welcoming
them home. In Selina I met my very best friend I ever had,
my husband of 49 years.

Aerial Gunner, B-17's, 301st Bomb Group, 419 Squad.
Served in Africa, Italy, Austria and Germany. Was in Italy
when Mt. Vesuvius erupted, assaulted all night with lava
rock. Sixty B-25's destroyed (more than Germans shot
down). Flew 28 missions, shot down, reported missing in
action. Captured by Germans and spent 13 months in
Stalag 17-B as P.O. W. Was on a forced march headed toward France at end of war.
Rescued by Pattons Army at Braunhau on the Inns River, Germany.

JEAN WILSON - U.S. ARMY
Mar. 1945 - June 1946
Army Nurse Corps. NurSe in Army General Hospital,
surgery, infection control, general patient care. Basic
training at Madigan General Hospital at Fort Lewis.
Stationed at Dibble General Hospital at Menlo Park,
California. The terrible trauma and injury to such young
men and how it affected their lives remains a vivid
memory.

Radar Mechanic, ground crew. Served in England.
Tried to catch a joy ride on a B-24, missed by a couple of
minutes. The plane crashed.
Serviced, Radar Radio, Sonar & Loran Electronic Equip.
RT 1/C Radio Tech. 1/C. Served in Ireland, England,
France, Italy, N. Africa, S. Pacific, Hawaii, Guam, Tinian,
Saipan. Duty on destroyer U.S.S. Tillman DD641. Es
corted 2 cruisers, 1 carrying Pres. Franklin Rosevelt to the
Yalta Conf. Escorted 200 troop transports and supply
ships to Europe bringing prisoners back. In the Pacific we stood by as 600 B-29's
took off from Tinian, Guam, Saipan to bomb Japan. We rescued survivors from
B-29's when departed from Japan and returned.
