Woman of the M onth
Mrs. Martha Mulkey Purdy Named
As Legion Woman Of The Month"_
We, of the Coquille American Legion Auxiliary are
proud to present as the chosen Woman-of-the-Month for Oc­
tober, Mrs. Martha Mulkey Purdy.
Mrs. Purdy was one of eight children bom to Mr. and
Linus Foster, Point Arena, Cali
fomia.
A fter finishing high
school she attended Ashland Nor­
mal school, and she taught school
for several years before her mar­
riage in 1817 to Charles E. Mulkey,
then superintendent of schools In
Coos county. Two children were
born to this union, Emma Frances
Mulkey, now Mrs. Donald Farr,
and Charles Mulkey, Jr., better
known as “Chuck.”

pointment, Coos county school
superintendent, which position she
still holds.
In 1945 she became the wife of I
Bruce Purdy. She is active in
many organizations, both civic and |
religious, but most of her energies
are given to the betterment of con­
ditions for the children of Coos
county.

Before the county agent’s office
was instituted in Coquille, Mrs.
Purdy was in charge of all 4-H
club activities. She is now in j
charge of the Coos County Fair
4-H club exhibits. She is chair­
man of the history committee for
the Pioneer and Historical associa­
tion, is a charter member of the I
Coquille Business and Professional
Women's club, and at present holds
the chairmanship of the United
Nations commitee of that club. She j
has been an active member of the
W. C. T. U. since 1916. A mem­
ber of the Christian church, she I
has been superintendent of the
Sunday school for the Past five
years. She is also chairman of the
Teachers Institute.
