Auto Stickers Ready Soon All Carriers Must’ Pay Three Per Cent The windshield stickers validating the 1943 motor vehicle registrations will be avallble early ip December, but all motorists should bear in mind than the 1942 plates must be left on their can, it wae announced today at the secretary of state’s office. For the first time since Oregon started issuing annual license plates, no new plates will be Issued to mo torists whose cars were registered in this state in 1942. They will receive instead a sticker, commemorating the one hundredth anniversary of the great immigration to Oregon in 1843. This sticker is to be placed in the up per center of the windshield,directly behind the rear-view mirror. Motorists were urged to make their applications early thia year in order to avoid the mail rush of the holiday season. Stickers must be on the wind shields after Jan. 1, but they may be attached any time after Dec. 18. According to a statement issued to day by J. W. Maloney, Collector of Internal Revenue, Portland, Oregon, all payments for transportation of property of any kind by motor ve hicle, rail, water, qr air that are made December 2 or later for transporta tion originating December 1 or there after will be subject to the new Fed eral tax of three per cent of the total charge for transportation. Collector Maloney said the .tax would be collected by the person re ceiving payment for th* transporta tion charges, and each month’s col lection of tax is to be remitted to his office during the following month, ac companied by a return of the tax on a form provided by the government “This tax will affect every person in the state having a truck or other motor vehicle for hire, which is used for transportation of property of any kind,” said Collector Maloney, “as well as all truck lines or organizations. All charges for transportation of property by rail, bus, trucks, or air plane, and any water-borne transpor tation would be taxed.” All persona liable for the tax should write to the Collector of Internal Revenue, 210 Custom Houae, Port land, and request forms on which to file monthly reports of tax and also apply for a Certificate of Registry, which is required under the law, as registration must be made not later than January 30, 1943, to avoid a fine of 830. imposed by law. OERMNG McKinley News Disease ordinarily takes the heavi est toll in hog production, but good sanitation measures will avert most diseases, says’ H. A. Lindgren, ex tension animal husbandman at Ore gon State college. Such common ailments as sore mouths, bullnose, parasites, and many others are largely associated with filth and dirt allowed to accumulate around hog lots, he says. With every hog badly needed as war food, Lind gren suggests sanitary measures to avoid disease losses. Among sug gestions made are the following: Plowing the hog lot every two years turns under accumulated in fected materials. Thoroughly clean ing farrowing quarters before sow is brought in helps prevent round worms. (Full directions in U. S. p. A. buuletin leaflet No. 8, free from county agents.) Liberal amounts of dry straw for bedding help. Stray dogs and birds carry disease to hog lots. Hogs are less likely to pick up disease from wood or concrete feed ing floors, and these are easy to keep clean. Clean drinking devices or running water pay dividends. Small pigs on floors may develop anemia for lack at iron, which may be avoided by placing a shovelful of uncontaminat ed soil in the pen once or twice weekly. Direct sunlight destroys many germs.
