According to instructions received
by Mart ho E. Mulkey, from State
Superintendent Rex Putnam, the
schools in Coos are being entered in
a scrap drive contest.
This scrap drive began on Monday,
October 4. Dr. John W. Studebaker,
U. S. Commissioner of Education, io
sponsoring thio school scrap drive all
over the United States. He has
promised that two prises will be swar
ded to the lure schools la each «tote
for the best showing in the scrap
drive.
The details of the school drive have
not been entirely worked out, but each
school is to report to the county school
superintendent as to the number of
pounds of each article collected and
the county school superintendent is
supposed to report to the state.
Mirs. Mulkey states that there is
considerable interest being shown
among the schools which she has
visited and it is anticipated that the'
government will rceive considreble
help in scfap collection because of the
children's efforts.

Harris Ellsworth
Here Yesterday
Harris Ellsworth, republican can
didate from thia new fourth congres
sional district which comprises the
counties of Coos, Curry, Douglas, Jo
sephine, Jackson, Linn and Lane,
spent the day in Coquille yesterduy
and made a mast favorable impres
sion as he met as many of the voters
as he was able to in so short a time.
In his recent keynote address Mr.
Ellsworth made a talk that contained
much of interest to the voters of thia
district and belowr are quoted three
paragraphs from that address The
second paragraph in particular indi
cates how he will stand on eliminat
ing unnecessary, wasteful spending
from non-war expenditures some
thing to which the present national
administration has never given a
thought:
“Congress, dominated hopelessly by
the new deal, has drifted into a state
of indifferences—a state or condition
bom of fear and fed by political dem
agoguery. I feel strongly on this
subject and am straining at the leash,
to do What I can toward correcting it.
I know very well that my voice will
be but one'in 43S, but if each district
in the United States will eiect.a sim
ilar voice we can do something toward 1
correcting the situation.
“I am convinced that our federal
government is too big. I am certain
there 'is terrific waste in non-war ex
penditures, which simply must be
eliminated.
Little or nothing has
been done toward stopping non-es
sential spending. I hqpe to be able
to do something about that.
'
“I believe in a sound and intelli
gent national old age benefit pro
gram.”
