* -Under the direction of Bam Wood,
producer and director of such all
time screen favorites as “Goodby Mr
Chips," “Our Town,” and “Kitty
Foyle," “Kings Row" has retained the
full flavor of the original novel. At
the Warner Bros Studio, the utmost
care was given to the casting of the
film, and to providing authentic back
grounds with the turn of the century
atmosphere that ia so inherent a part
'f the story of “Kings Row.”
, Vividly brought to life on the
screen is this story of young people,
hemmed in by the stifling inhibitions
and taboos of a small midwestern
town in the early years of this cen
tury. Struggling to find happiness
against the opposition of the seething
undercurrent of gossip and backbiting
the strong and brave emerge victor
ious, the weak are submerged.
Two young men, and the two ro-(
nances in which each becomes in
volved provide the central dramatio
situations. The love affair of Robert
Cummings, as Parris Mitchell, the
gently reared grandson of a foreign
noblewoman, and
his childhood
sweetheart, Cassandra (played by
Betty Field) meets a tragic end. He|
eventually finds some consolation and
a promise of future happiness WithI
Ellse (played by Kaaren Verne). The
other young man, Drake McHugh,
who Is portrayed by Ronald Reagan.
Is embittered by the parental opposi
tion which Louise Gordon’s (Nancy
Coleman) family put in the way of
tiieir marriage, but finds his true
mate in Randy Monaghan (Ann Sheri- |
dan), the right girl from the wrong I
side of the tracks.
