Must Await Disaster
The altitude of the Red Cram, that
<U will not provide, in advance, for
disaster relief is one that is causing
much unfavorable comment in the
county. All must give the Red Cross
unstinted commendation for prompt
response when disaster comes, but
the attitude and rule that nothing
«•an be done prior to the disaster is
\ une which is not appreciated.
The «condemnation was forcibly
. brought out at a meeting of the
mayors of Coos county, Dr. [)ix, head
of the medical staff of the Civilian
Defense Council, and L. A. Blanc,
county Red Cross chairman, which
was held in Marshfield Tuesday aft­
ernoon. Mayor R. F. Milne attended
from Coquilie.
The meeting was to endeavor to
secure stretchers and bandages which
would be so vitally heeded should an
enemy air raid injure any consider­
able number of peoples That the Red
Cross could not draw from its store­
house supply for stretchers and:
bandages in anticipation of such a
raid, nor furnish lunds with which to
-* purchase them was Mr. Blanc’s state­
ment, but that they would ^».forth­
coming should the need arise, was
the not too comforting addition.
The mayors were all asked to make
request of the several city councils
to provide funds for buying this
needed equipment, Coquille’s quota
being set at MOO
Mayor Milne, as did other mayors,
stated that there was no provision
in the city’s- budget for such an
amount for such a purpose and that
■t was wo late to make any change in
this year’s budget, much as the pur­
chase of the equipment 1 r needed.
Further contributions to a fund to
take protective measures can hardly
be considered at-this time, as those
who contributed to the recent Red
C/oss drive for funds supposed that
organization would take care of just
such emergencies as now exist.
