credit” maintained for their use on
the books of banks. A total of five
banks in the larger centers of the state
reported that they carried on their
books *48,455,630 in "open lines of
credit’’ offered to and kept available
for regular borrowers for use as need­
ed by them. Of this amount *21,319,-
593 or 44 per cent was used.
The average number of new loans
made per bank during the six months
period under review was *.411 and

The robin redbreasts are in the
cherry tree again.
Their greedy
beaks plunge into the luscious redness
of the cherries, while their young,
with speckled breasts and the inno­
cence of youth, glean the fallen cher­
ries from the ground. Too tame are
all the birds about the place.
The hummingbird in the delphin­
iums is a darting jewel of emerald
and bronze. It comes almost within
reach of our hand as we stand spell­
bound by its brilliance and miniature
perfection.
We love to watch the yellow finch
hunt for insects in the apple tree;
after much hopping from bough to
bough, it always stands on its head
when the unlucky aphis is nipped
from the under aide of an apple Mat.
There is a little brown bird, re­
sembling a sparrow, which feeds on
the ground under the shrubs and
seems to live a charmed lite tar other­
wise the marauding cats would quick­
ly finish off his kind. He also ap­
pears oblivious to human presence.
The swallows are safe enough from
capture as they crisacroes the sky,
homing under the eaves of a neigh­
bor’s house. With wings set, their
v-shaped bodies in flight are so full
at grace it hurts to watch them.
There is also a little gray fellow
with a top-knot, nameless to us, and a
shy wood thrush we do not often see
but whose mellow whistle reveals its
presence.
To return to the robins, our favorite
sight is that of a robin in search of a
worm, hot-footing it across the lawn.
