one-hori ed rhinoceros, the tiger and
the flying fox, the wild dog and a
rare kind-of antelope found only in
the mountains. The butterfly family
is well represented, including one
specimen which attaches itself to
the leaves of its favorite plant and
blends in with the background to
escape its enemies.
Description of Hamming Bird
The earliest account of the hum
mingbird ever made in English, as
written in William Wood’s “New
England’s Prqspect.’’ published in
1834, said: “The Hummingbird is
no bigger than a hornet, yet hath
all the dimensions of a bird, as bill
and wings, with quills, spiderlike
legges, small clawes; for colour she
is as glorious as the raine-bow; as
she flies she makes a little humming
noise like a Humble-bee, wherefore
she is called the Humbird."
