A coating of ice on the pavement
caused a serious accident on the
highway two miles south of Drain
Monday night injuring four people,
two of them seriously.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Cullen Mur
phy, of Portland, were the most se
riously injured. Their car struck a
car driven by Ray N. Dean, of Marsh
field, which had skidded to a right
angle across the highway.
In the
Dean car were Hoyle Phillips, Gold
Beach, Jar ley Pete, Marshfield, and
Miss Mary Ella Cary, of Coquille.
Mr. Murphy was still in a semi
conscious condition last night, his in
juries weri a possible fracture of the
skull and a deep cut over the left
eye. Mrs. Murphy sustained a frac
tured vertebrae, fractured lower jaw
and fractured radius. Her condition
was reported as very critical last eve
ning by Dr. C. B. Wade.
Jarley Pete and Miss Cary were
also treated at Mercy hospital for
minor cuts and bruises but neither
were seriously injured.
They were
discharged yesterday morning after
receiving treatment.
Both cars were almost completely
demolished.
