Nites returned last FridaJ evening from San Francisro-wMre h< attended the Pacific coast conference of Ford department heads .with the sales organization of the coast. He attended the banquets held for the retailers and salesmen and also that given by the Ford organization -to the governor of California, the mayor erf San Francisco, the bankers and and newspaper men. The principal thought of the talks at the latter banquet was that it was now up to industry to give the final push to end the depression. Speak ing for the^Ford industry he stated that it would require 30,000 head of catUe, 20,000 head of hogs, and thou sands of acres of cotton, besides other agricultural items for the production of the million cars Ford expects to turn out In 1935. And Ford is but on* of several automobile manufacturers who will need similar products from the farms. They will make the can If they can seU them; the peoplowlll buy if they are earning money to buy with and when industry and the farms are producing, the people have the money. It’s an endless chain but when one link fails the entire collec tion of links ceases to function. WHY WARS MUST CEASE The result of ten year’s research by the national .committee on the cause and cure of war is dramatically voiced in the new book, “Why Wars Must Cease,” written by'ten great women of America, whose position and experience qualify them to be heard. The "Foreword” lays the blame for war on the maintenance of the organized war system and de clares that war can and will be abol ished only when the nations of the world want peace instead of war. “If We Do Not Destroy War, War .. Will Destroy Us,” is the answer of Carrie Chapman Catt, to "Why Wars Must Cease.” There is need to call a mobilization of the common sense of the nations to bring the entire war system to a definite end. "War Is Obsolete,” is the chapter written by Mrs. Franklin D. Roose velt, who cites witchcraft as another idea which has become obsolete, though once it was an apparent re alty in the world. “Wars Waste Human Life,” is powerfully set forth by President ■Mary E. Woolley, of Mt. Holyoke Col lege, who points out the enormous loss from death, disease and race de terioration that flows from war. “War Costs Too Much,” writes kAv William Brown Melony, and proves that greed alone made the world war; greed for money and power. “Wars Produce Economic Chaos,” is the reason given, by Florence Brewer Boeckel, proving her point by a scholarly chapter on the disturb ance in all the nations which became evident in., universal depression. At the end of a war, governments finds themselves with their resources drained and are neither able nor will ing to face the problems of return to peace with the energetic determina tion with which they met the prob lems of war. “In War You Never Know What You Are Fighting For,” is the belief of Emily Newell Blair, who shows that anything is justifiable that wins, for war has no ethics. “Wars Unleash Demoralizing In stincts,” > avers Judge Florence E. Allen, from her wide experience in endeavor to right social wrongs. Among the greet world powers for four and a half yean the acts which constitute the major crimes of peace time were the purpose of life. “War Breeds War,” is proved by Dr. Alice Hamilton, from the experi ence of Germany where, she says, it cannot be denied that the worship of force hi* come back ... far stronger than before the war. “War Interferes with the Normal Growth of Civilization.” is the sub ject of the forceful chapter by Jane Addama, who declares that as a re sult of the wdrld war both coercion and fear are re-established in society as accepted methods of control.— K.
