S. forest service in co-operation with the census bureau show that the average price paid for Douglas fir stumpage in 1933. based on private sales, <vas $1.92 per thousand feet. Ponderosa pine sold for $2.64 per thousand feet and western hemlock for 93 cents. The average price paid for softwoods of all species in the United States was $2.57 per thousand. The average price in 1932 was $2.82. ’ PAGI PIVI n*. . Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Rackleff and family returned Sunday from Canby, where they spent Christmas. Ed Racklef, father of Lawrence Rack leff, returned with them and many of his former friends have enjoyed vis its from him. He spent a few days in Coquille, on New Year’s day he drove to Bandon and on Tuesday he went to Langlois where he formerly oper ated a store. ' A Julia Rodgers enrolled in the eighth grade Monday morning from the Twin Oaks school. Her parents have moved to the P. W. Laird place for the year. Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Hollenbeck and family moved the first of the year to Coquille where Mr. Hollen beck has employment. The C. J. Bressler family have moved to the Hollenbeck house on Fishtrap. A short business meeting of the Ladies* Aid was held at the Joel Root home with Mrs. Naomi Robison as hostess Thursday afternoon. Bible study was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. David Root Thurs day evening of last week with fifteen present. The first eighteen verses of the Gospel of Matthew were studied as the beginning of the study of the New Testament, which will be stud ied consecutively this year at the Bible classes. Those present were Mrs. C. A. Swift, Mrs. Clarence Schroeder. Miss Edythe Woodward, Mrs. Naomi Robison, Mrs. J. L. Bur tts, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Rack leff, Ed Rackleff, Mr. and Mrs. Er nest Watkins, Mr. and Mrs. David Root, T. B. MacDonald, and Sam Root. A marshmallow toasting was enjoyed after the lesson. Earl Downing, of Coquille, con ducted the morning services at Ara go Sunday with a special musical number furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Woodward, Mrs. J. L. Burtis, Mrs. Emily Hickam, Mrs. John Carl, Sam Root, Ray Parker and David Root. Mrs. Edith Woodward and daugh ter, Miss Edythe, left Sunday after noon for Fairview, after spending the vacation at Mrs. Woodward’s home. They visited Mr. and Mrs. I. B. Sevy at Langlois one day during the va cation. Miss Joan Milani was operated on Saturday night for appendicitis. She is making a satisfactory recovery Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Shaw and children, Patty and Arlan, drove to Ashland to spend New Year’s day with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. H. M. Shaw. They returned Thursday eve ning. Clyde Fleming came in from the CCC mamp at Coos Head Thursday and spent the week-end visiting his brothers, Gordon, Ray and Emil, and his sister, Alma. This is his first trip to Arago. Shelby McAllister returned to Ash land New Year’s day to resume his work at the Southern Oregon Nor mal School. He will finish his course in the spring. Mrs. John Devereux snd son, of Bandon, visted at the Geo. Zinzer- ling home Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Parker and sons returned from Medford and other way points last week. Mr. Parker and the boys in the woodwork class have worked on the gymnasium floor this week, getting it in readiness for the basketball season. Two games will be held this week, one with Coquille and one on Friday night with Langlois. Ten and fifteen cents will be the ad- mission charges as they are not regularly scheduled games. . A few neighbors gathered at . the home of Mrs. Edith Woodward last Saturday evening to spend the eve- < ning with games and visiting before she and Miss Edythe returned to Fairview. Those enjoying the occa sion were Mr. and Mrs. Tyrrell Woodward. Mrs. Naomi Robison, Mrs Emily Hickam, Miss Alice Scott, Sam Root. Oliver Myers and Harvey Myers. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Watkins and Mrs. C. A. Swift returned from Ban don Thursday evening. Mrs. Swift spent New Year’s with her daughter, Mrs. Lawrence Stitt. Mr. Watkins and family drove down Wednesday to take Mrs. J. K. Baker home. Andrew Smalley was in Myrtle Point Saturday, the first trip out af ter his illness during the holidays. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Hampton return ed from their trip to Loe Angeles the first of the week. Fairview Miss Marjorie Judd visited Mias Aria Jenkins, of Brewster Valley, for several days during the holidays. Saturday, January 12. the Fair view-North Fork Grange, No. 739, will hold its first meeting of the year in the grange hall at Fairview. The new year promises to be an outstand ing one under the leadership of the new master and his assistant officers. Lew Sonneland returned to his work in North Bend the first of the week after spending several days with his family. Due to the heavy rains recently the upper North Fork is raging in its banks and in several places has par tially covered the main road, making travel in the valley a risky business. Mrs. Nagle, of near Marshfield,! visited* Mr. and Mrs. John Phillip; during the holidays. Mrs. Wm. Judd, the new president of the Fairview Woman's Club, called the first meeting of the year on Wed nesday, January 9. At the Grange meeting Friday eve ning. five officers, who were not present at’the joint installation held in Myrtle Point last month, were in stalled. They were as follows: over seer, Vem Magill; assistant stew- Don McPherson; lady assistant stew ard, Mrs Chas. Johnson; Ceres, Mrs. Don McPherson; Pomona, Mcs. L. A. Duncan. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Barnett and niece, Miss Esther, of Arago, were dinner guests Sunday dt the Dwight Culver home. Miss Ionella Curtiss will have charge of the Christian Endeavor meeting next Sunday evening, the subject of which is, "What Do I Know About Prayer?” Teddy Miller led an interesting and helpful meet ing last Sunday evening, a pleasing feature of which was a solo by Miss Myrtle Beckett. Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Puetf and two sons who recently moved here from Bend, left Tuesday for Pasco, Wash., where they will visit relatives for a while. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Rookard are occupying their house during their absence. Mrs. Matilda Hill was honored Thursday, Jan. 3, with a delightful surprise party in honor of her 89th birthday anniversary. The first guests to arrive were the following friends from Coquille: Mr. and Mrs. Earl Downing and little daughters, Phyllis Rae and Joan; Mrs. Amelia Hill, Mrs. M. O. Hooton, Miss Jennie Lafferjy,. Mrs. George Swinney and daughter', Miss Ferrantine, Mrs. L. E. Alexander and daughter, Eva, and Mrs. Harriet Schaer. They brought many birthday gifts and a potluck dinner. In the afternoon the merry party was joined by Mrs. W. A. Lett, Mrs. Orlin Lett, Mrs. Jas. Morrison. Mrs. Stanley Lake, Mrs. Hattie Hatcher and Mrs. .Ray L. Beckett, who also brought lovely tokens of re membrance and a birthday cake. Mrs. Hill, though crippled for the past 20 years as the result of a broken hip, enjoys very good health for one of her advanced age. Since March, 1933, she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. A. O. Hooton, the only one of her five children who survives.
