Astute politics, cluttering up the field with candidate* who have no •how on earth for election. Hugh McLain, doughty democrat of Marshfield, in winding his party’’« nomination for county judge, places himself in line to hold elective office again. His republican opponent, the incumbent, labors under a severe dis advantage, says the Oregon Voter. ! There is one thing about the Ore gon primary law which should be changed—if the double expense of pri mary and general election campaigns is deemed necessary—and that i* the date for holding it is three or four months earlier than it should be. A primary in August or September would be plenty early. i TABLOIDS W. have failed so dismally in their major. responsibilitity, that of maintaining order.” According to the Voter the ' public ha* little knowledge of the amount of violence that ha« occurred in Portland and it ha* almost no con ception of the extent to which person al and property right* have been trampled and disregarded. Ananias, the Firm Chisler Early in the Christian era the world was having a fiing at communism, in “Acte of the Apostles,” one of the interesting books of the Bible, we find these passage*: “And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and one soul; neither said any of them that ought of the things which he pos sessed was his own, but they had all things in common. Neither wa* there any among them that lacked, for a* many a* were possessors of land* or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold and laid them down at the apostles* feet, and distribution was made unto every man according aa he had need.” When these good people sold their belongings, of course there were a bunch of buyers at hand to pick up the bargain*. It is quite likely bar gains were to be had, because those who were selling out for the purpose If dividing the proceeds with their crowd wouldn’t have held out for very high prices. The buyers were the "rugged individualiste” of that period, and they multiplied eaeoedingly, and have been running the world ever since. However, R begin* to look as though the pendulum wa* about to begin swinging th* other way. Beading farther in "Act* of the Apoetlee” we find that communism Then, too. General Martin is just popular among the republicans, es pecially in Multnomah county where th* big vote is concentrated, as he is among the democrats and this popu larity is expected to carry not only the General himself into office but the rest of the ticket as well. Further encouragement is found by the dem ocrats in the prospect that President Roosevelt, himself, will visit Oregon this fall in a personal appeal for sup port of his administration by the se lection of a governor and a congres sional delegation in sympathy with hi* policies. Five members of the state legktla- ture who sought to come back for another session were eliminated in the recent primary election, according to a survey of the results in the sev eral districts. Of the state senatom seeking to return William F. Wood ward, of Portland was the only one defeated. Three bouse members Went down to defeat in the primaries. They ,W*re 'Estes Snedecor, Portland; Wil liam H. Bennett, of Port Orford; and Arthur McPhillipe, of McMinnville, all democrats. Otto Paulus, of Salem, republican, who nerved in the House at the last session was defeated ' in his attempt to secure the nomination for state senator from Marion county. Several other veteran* will also be missing from the next cession. Among them are Senators Joe Dunne, of Multnomah county, and Sam Brown, of Marion county, and Repre sentative Frank Lonergan, of Mult nomah county, all of whom relinquish ed their seats in the legislature for a chance at the governorship, and Earl Snell, of Arlington, and Carle Abrams, of Salem, both former House members who aspired to a, more lu crative state job in the form of secre tary of state. Should Jay Upton suc ceed in winning the congressional race in the second district over Wal ter Pierce, incumbent, another veter an senator will step out of the pic ture. feALLsJUA The primary election over, the lead ens of the two major parties in Ore gon are devoting their time to dig | By S. The Oregon At any rate it can be «aid that the Voter is the only publication coming boys around the capital who depend out of Portland that ha* had the in upon gubernatorial favor for their testinal vitality to tell what has been jobs are feeling a lot better now than going on in the big town. "We ef the they were before the primary election public desire to know,” says the Vot when it looked as though State Treas er, “what haa hapepned to our various urer Holman might be the republican branches of government that they' standard bearer. Especially is this I a was the undoing of a certain named Ananias, although it made of him a world figure of whom all have heard. ('He Mill stands a* the symbol of excessive lying, although he could n’t bold a candle to some of the ex pert* ot today who do their stuff and get away with it) It appears that Ananias wanted to be a communist publicly and a rugged individualist pri vately, so he sold a posaemion "and kept back part of the price, his wife *>o being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apoa- tle*’ feet." An ancestor of Clarence Darrow, who belonged to the socialist wing of the communist party, started an investigation. He learned that Ananias A Wife were big shots as property owners, also that they had inade false returns to the communists and thereby became the world’s first chislers. When con fronted with the evidence of hi* du plicity the Bible narrative further tells us thst Ananias "hearing these words fell down and gave up the ghost, and great fear came upon all them that heard these things." The same fate befell Sapphire, the wife of Ananias, but leading _ . theologian* hold that she was probably dragged Jnto the mess by her husband. With becoming loyalty she told the court the same story as did Ananias but she was at the time unaware of the fate that had befallen him a few hourá previously. ’ Now-a-days chislers are without fear. ‘In a short time they will be bragging. Thus from holy writ we learn that communism was an idealism practiced by Jesus and his disciples. Now it is hoodlum ism, led by racketeer*. true of (Hanzen and William Einzig, state purchasing agent, both of whom would walk the political plank if Hol- man had anything to oay about their fate. Dunne, however, is known to be friendly to the present regime and would probably retain most, if not all, of Meier’s appointees in the event of his election. Of course, there is a strong possibility of the election of General Martin, the democratic can didate, in which event there would probably be a general house cleaning at the capital, but at least the pros pects are a lot brighter for the ad ministration crowd than they would have been with Holman as the repub lican nominee for that would have meant the end for the present organ ization regardless of which candidate won the fall election. The remarkable showing made by Sam Brown, the Gervais farmer, in the primary race has raised that erst while "insignfficant candidate” to the level of a power to be reckoned with by the republican politicians and al ready, it is understood, overtures are being made in an effort to awing Brown and' his “trn* progressives” into line for the support of Dunne. One rumor has it that Brown has been tentatively elated for th* post of stat* director of agriculture, to succeed Max Gehlhar, should Dunne be the next governor, while another rumor has it that Brown is being groomed for the post of chairman of the republican state central commit tee. The democrat*, laboring under the handicap of a minority party in this state are banking strongly on the popularity of the national administra tion and it* “new deal” policies to earry their candidates into office.
