WHAT BECOMES OF THEIR WIVES? The question it frequently auked to how a «alee tax la considered hi other states where it is in force, and many people are withholding decision as to whether they will favor or op pose Oregon's sales tax law on which a referendum has been asked. Below la quoted a letter from H. B. Sho walter, state superintendent of schools in Washington, who addressed his let ter to E. F. Carleton, sercetary-treas- urer of the Oregon State Teachers As sociation, which answers the inquiry of sales tax investigators as to its success in our sister state to the north whore the receipts are used for school purposes as they will be in Oregon if the law is upheld at the primary: A three-car collision, in which one was injured, caused a little excite ment about 12:10 Tuesday noon, on the Henry street bridge at the inter section with Fourth street. Jem Williams was coming from the north, expecting to turn east on Fourth to go home. He saw cars coming past Third street and slowed down to permit them to peas before he turned left on Fourth. As he slowed down he signalled for a stop and could see nothing behind him in his mirror. After two cam had passed end he was waiting for the third driven by Sam Welch, to cross Fourth, he was hit in the rear by the school bus, driven by Albert Rhule. The impact caused the bus to shear over in front of the Welch ear and across the bridge. The establishment of the vales and occupation tax laws was in tended to relieve local districts and in crease the state’s contribution to edu cation. Money coming in on the fifteenth if each month has proved to be a de cided advantage, for we make our ap portionment on the twentieth and this tends to give each district cash to meet its current expenses. Monthly appor tionments have ranged from one mil lion to two million, and during the short interim more than thirty per cent of the districts in the state have pone on a cash basis for the first time in more than a dozen years. The plan will eventually make it possible for all of our schools to meet heir current expenses from a cash ae- .•ount. In this way the large interest expenditure will be eliminated besides ill the additional costs of regietratam ind advertising of school warrants, ind finally of the discounts on teach ers’ warrants which have been made luring this depression period. Generally speaking, the people of >ur state are in accord with this plan >f school support, and school adminis- .rators are enthusiastic about the out- ‘ook which it offers in the support of ‘.he schools. x This Disintegration Test shows, how ficaasF ASPIRIN starts pain relief in 2 to 7 SECONDS!
