Tuberculosis kill« more persons under twenty-one than any >thsr communicable disease. Pneumonia wa* the only communi- cable disease causing more deaths last year than tuberculosis in this-stat«. Pneumonia, however, makes itsdlf known to its victims in no uncertain terms so that patients do not spread its germs to unsuspecting persons for years as can those with certain types of tuberculosis. Long years of costly treatment of the tuberculosis frequently at public expense, is not needed for most vic- tims of other diseases. Nineteen thousand dollars has been spent each months this past year, from tax funds, in Oregon for the care of tu berculosis patients, and seventy per- sons have been waiting for months to be admitted to the ahray« filled state tuberculosis hospital«. This seventy is one-sixth approximately of the to- bal capacity of the two institution* operated by the state. No other disease so twists the des tinies of whole families in such num bers. Life plans of young people go down before it when they or the fam ily wage-earner contract it. The lose of earning power ia life-long in nome cases even where the disease is ar rested. Since- It takes its greatest toll between the ages of 15 and 45, and ia the leading cause of death in this group its economic cost to fami- lies and the Abate is enormous. The National Tuberculosis Association, sponsors of the nationwide sale of Christmas Seals, estimates the total annual national cost at $1,017,000,000, including loss of life, loss of wages, and cost of treatment. Nine cases are estimated to exist for each annual death. Each day this past year an Ore- gonian has died from tuberculosis. Every fifth day the death was of a young person under twenty. Yet it is wholly preventable and if treat ment is both early and adequate, curable. The Christmas Seal Sale makes it possible for you to contribute to the ounce of prevention. This year aa never before local organizations must depend apdn the Seal Sale to support local health agencies, to discover ac tive cases of tuberculosis, to arrange for the examination of children who have been exposed, to provide X-ray examinations of the infected and to protect such children against further exposure. The Christmas Seals serve to prevent the seed of infection from finding fruitful soil in our children.
