J. J. Stanley, who suffered an at tack from gravel in his kidneys while on hi* trip to Crater take, suffered another attack last evening. Dr. M. Earl Wilson was called and gave the same diagnosis as did th* Los Angeles physician who treated Mr. Stanley when he was alone in camp on his trip. For about an hour Monday evening, at the regular session of the city council, Recorder Leslie was engaged in reading a new traffiic ordinance for the city, to make it conform to the present state law. The charter pro vide« an ordinance must be read once as a whole and twice by title (and that required ten minutes) before it can be adopted by the council. Th* adoption process required less than a minute. A letter from Mayor Carson, of Portland, was read, inviting Mayor Berg to attend the meeting of mayors there last night and witness th* N. R. A. parade. Councilman Jeub recom mended that the mayor be permitted to go—at his own expense! B. B. Sanders was granted permis sion to haul logs over the city streets, from the Ed Aasen camp near the city’s source of water supply on Rink creek. His >1000 bond was approved. City Engineer Stacer was authoriz ed to have the upper windows on the south side-of the Community Building repaired and new glass installed where it had been broken out. The leak* on the south roof seem to come from the windows, rather than through the paper and be thought the roofing would serve for another year. The windows are also to be painted on the inside so that boys will have no in centive to get on the roof to watch programs inside without paying an admission. And the authorities are, going to make an example of those caught up there. Pioneer's 86th Birthday H. iL. Cardwell and family epent the week-end at Powers visiting with ‘Mr. Cardwell’s mother, Mrs. Susan Jane Cardwell, of (Newberg, who is celebrating her 86th birthday at the home of her grandson, Lawrence Dicks, at Powers. Mrs. 8. J. Card- well is an old pioneer of Coquille. She came across the plains with ox teams in 1863, coming to Coquille about 1879. Her first home, a log cabin, was about where (Norcott’s Studio is now. Later the Cardwells moved to 'a frame house on the corner where Safeway store is located. Mr. Card- well owned tho first livery stable in Coquille. It stood where Goulds* Fur niture store is now. Mrs. 8. J. Cardwell is the mother of ten children, some of them born in CoquiHe. She is enjoying good health and rode from Newberg here in an suto to make her visit. Three Federated W Club SenaionH Next Week The district meeting of the Feder ated Women’s Clubs of Oregon will be held in Roseburg next Monday. On the program that day will appear Mm. J. E. Norton, president of th* Coquille Woman's Club, who will speak ea “The Benefit of Federation Activities to the Local Club.” Other members of the Coquille club going out are Mr*. O. C. Sanford and Mr*. L. W Clwv<r-r Mrs. Lillian Bilyeu, of Dalia*, preai dent of the State Federation, who will also be there, and Mro. William Bell, of Roseburg, president of the district association, will accompany the Co quille ladies home and will be guests at a picnic kmcheon on Tuesday morn ing at the Norton Bandon beach cot tage, given by the board of the Co quille club. The same afternoon, Tuesday, is the date for the regular monthly meeting of the-Coquille club in the Parish House, and the two viaiting federation preaident* will be in attendance and address .the club. Mrs. Louise Cottrell, secretary of the state child welfare commiasion, is also to appear on th* program at the Coquille ffieeting. On Wednesday the three visitoM and about 20 of the Coquille club membero will go to Power* for the meeting of the Coo* County Federa tion of Women’s Club*. Coos People Enjoy Trip Mr. and M m . Bob Bennett and Mr. and Mrs. John Perrott, of Bandon, went up to Casey’* camp on the Crater Lake road fifteen miles this aide of Prospect on Wednesday of last week, the men to hunt for deer and the women to hunt for mineral apecimens on the near by mountain ■ide*. Saturday morning M m . Bennett phoned her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Stanley, of this place, and gave such an attractive description of the place that her parents left immediate ly to join the one* already gone. • The deer hunters met with no suc cess, seeing nothing but doe* and fawim; so Tuesday morning they packed their kite and started for cen tral Oregon, sending the women folks back home with Mr. and Mrs. Stanley. The women folks report a moot en joyable time, a very attractive camp ing place, pleasant people and sur rounding«. The hunters said they in tended to stay out until they “bring back the bacon.” An unfortunate circumstance the illness of Mr. Stanley. Ferguson at Port Orchard, Wash. Mr. Ferguson was superin tendent of Coquille schools for sev eral year* prior to the summer of 1982, and hi* many friends here will rejoice in hie success in the mercantile business. He say*, "I hear Coquille business is picking up considerably. Our business has been exceptionally good. The Bremerton store is going over in a big way.
