Trees.—Mrs. John A. Msrtin
Cor. Sec.—Mrs. Nellie E. Whereat
Do you know it is time to think
about spring bulbs! Not just plant
ing them, I mean, but what you ex
pect to have blooming in the spring;
for to have lots of bloom in the spring
you must begin planting now and con
0
tinue through September and October.
Among the fall - planted bulbs are
Crocus, Snowdrops, Tulips, Hyacinths,
Lily of the Valley, Hemoracallis ' or
Day. Lily, Amaryllis, Chionodoxia or
Glory of the Snow, Daffodils and Nar
cissi of various typess, Sparaxis, Ix-
ias, Scillas in varioue types, Muscari
or Grape Hyacinths, which are among
the lower growing bulbs.
For the
taller lilies, Lilium Tigrinum or Tiger
Lily, the Speciosums, Henryi, Regale,
the Easter lilies, Giganteum and For-
mosum, Pardalinum or leopard Lily,
Hansoni or Yellow Japanese Lily,
Canadian Lily, Turks Cap Lily, Ma
donna Lily, Lilium Auratum, Ranun
culus, Anemones and Amarayllis are
best left for spring planting, although
here, as a general thing, the anemone»*
carry over the winter when fall plant
ed. Lilium Elegans and Umbellatum
are also fall planted.
In the “American Home” for Sep
tember, 1983, there is a fine article
on lilies from which I will give you
some of the high lights; according to
this artilce the Madonna lily should
be planted not later than September,
the others in October. An some bulbs
$ 52, 829.24 ordered may not arrive until-Novem
ber or December, the ground should
be ready for their planting as noon as
they come. Auratum, Regale, Speci-
asums, Easter Lilies, Elegans, Han
soni, Henryi, Japanese, Tiger, Tenui-
folium, and Umbellatum are classed
in the stem-rooting bulbs and should
be planted from eight to twelve inches
deep. In planting in borders oi
among other plants, one should be
sure to plant them where they will not
be choked out by other rapidly
»1,292,781.82 spreading plants. Lilies like lota of
room and don’t want to be crowded in
the least. They also do better for
some shade during the hottest part
of the day, although t>he Amaryllis
and the early spring bulbs want a
sunny situation.
A well drained,
loamy «oil is best for lilies and the
bulbs should be placed on a layer of
clean sand.
Keep lime away from
lilies; some like the Madonna, Ele-
gans, Hansoni, and Tiger will grow
regardless of lime in the soil? but the
them resent it strongly. Here many
have been troubled by a blight, par
»1.292,781.82 ticularly on the Madonna Lily; for
this, I. George Quint, .author of the
above mentioned article, recommends a
srpray of Bordeaux mixture or othei
copper base fungicide. He also says

PAGI SEVEN
WITHOUT
that “a bulb once planted should re
main undisturbed until it fails to
bloom; in that event, dig it up, when
dormant, clean it and remove scales.”
Your irises should also be planted
in the fall and your German Iris at
tended to as soon as possible if you
have not already done so.
It is also a good time to consider
your sweet peas for next year’s bloom
and get your seed as soon as possible,
so as to get them in this fall. The
best eweet peas obtainable on the
coast are to be obtained from Ferry-
Morse Co., San Francisco. Mr. Morse
had made a specialty of growing
sweet peas and has done more to im
prove this lovely flower than any one
I know of.
.In the “American Home” -there is
also a good article, ‘'Roses are better
in Autumn,” by J. H. Nicolas.
It
goes against the idea so generally ac
cepted that roses are only for spring
or June blooming and it goes into the
matter thoroughly giving directions
and varieties that anyone can follow.
On the Drane house a few doors
from my home, is a large Wisteria
vine in full bloom. This is the second
time this year it has been covered
with great clusters of deep purple
bloom, but the first time, it had no
leaves, now the rich green leaves
make a fine backgroud for the purple
bloom. It bloomed twice list year,
out I thought then it was just a freak
>f the season. Now, I am beginning
to think it is its nature.
