There will be and should be, an ef fort made to restore the per capita school tax to its former figure of ap proximately >20, as a just means of equalising educational costs, but noth- ng can be expected along that line this year. CASH VALUE OF COUNTY AGENT “FLU” STILL ON THE RAMPAGE Lloyd W. Oddy, county clerk-elect, who will anHume the duties of that of fice next Tuesday morning, moved to Coquille from Marshfield on Tuesday. He and hi« family will occupy the Bert Folsom house on Henry street Mr Oddy announces that John W. Leneve has been named to act as dep uty clerk and bookkeeper, Miss Georg- ianna Johnson as recording clerk, and his daughter, Miss France« Oddy, as deputy clerk. Mr. Oddy stated that he would do his best to keep up the work of the of fice with the help allowed under the budget, but it will be a smaller force than has been employed in the clerk’s office for the past 20 yearn, and there is considerably more work than there was in 1912. In Douglas county, which corre sponds very closely to Coos in the amount of business done in the clerk’s office, although fees received are larg er in Coos, the budget allows |800 for »art time help in addition to the same number of regular employes m are al lowed here for next year, and Mr. Agee, county clerk at Roseburg, says it is almoetimpoasible to get by; some work has to be neglected. .......... The only other change in personnel at the court house next week will be in the surveyor’s office where E. L. Vinton is to succeed E. H. Kern*. In the sheriff's office it is not really a change, for Archie Philip has not >een serving as deputy sheriff since he was slugged and his skull fractured a few weeks ago by a tramp whom he was giving a ride, but the budget al- Whoopee Show at Liberty The Liberty Theatre management invites all ita patrons at the 9 o’clock show Saturday night, New Year’s Eve, to be their guests at a Buster Keaton extravagansa, "Speak Easily,’* to be presented at midnight, for the New Year’s Whoopee Show. Coquille has no night clubs where the public may meet to give the New Year a rousing welcome, but Messrs. Clsver and Wood are giving local people the next best, a chance to see a girl show of 50 chor us girls, surrounding Keaton and Jimmy “Schnoasle” Durant. The “froxen faced” comedian plays the role of a fossilised college profes sor who inherits a million dollars. On his way to New York he “adopts” a broken-down tank-town musical show composed of Durante and the dancing girls. Their adventures together pro vide the hilarious theme of the picture.
