A few years ago the cow buyer went out to buy ordinary cows and out of the total some would turn out to be good toss. The present day buyer, mostly because of the economic necessity of getting the very beet he can find, is looking for cows which have been tested for both tuberculo sis and abortion and which come from high producing stock. Ho ie an ar dent producer of production records which not only provide information in the production of cows but also on sires used in the herd. Although the price being paid for dairy animals is very low this year buyers from California report that there will bo an increasing demand for good dairy animals each year to replenish condemned stock in Califor nia. Coos and Curry counties, be cause of the geographical location, and because both counties are on the tuberculosis accredited list, are fa vored sections in which to buy dairy cattie. Not only are these two counties on the accredited tuberculosis list but Curry county to now in a position to be declared an abortion control area, according to E. R. Derflinger, asst state veterinarian, who, Working with R. M. Knox, asst, county agent, has just completed the second tuberculo sis teat and the first abortion test in the county. It has “ - - e_---___ _ also eliminated a lot of abortion re acting cows. A value which has been incidental, however, which is develop- ing a reputation among cow buyers that the area to practically free from tuberculosis and as a proof of the -freedom of Bovine tuberculosis in thia section dairy cattle are now ac- cepted .for Interstate shipment on the presentation of a bill of health which can be issued on stock coming from a modified accredited area and from herds where no reaction was found on the last test made within a year of date of shipment, according to state ments made by Dr. Derflinger while in this section. Herds Being Signed for Tenting Members are now being secured for the CoqulltiTValley Cow Testing As- aoication by Wm. Griffin, tester, and George H. Jenkins, County Agent who are canvassing dairymen in the Coquille Valley in this connection. In line with other business activity an attempt ia being aside to lower the cost of testing work this year by in creasing the number of eattle on test and it is thought that many of the dairymen will avail themselves of the opportunity of testing their dairy herds this year. In answer to a letter sent out by »• - art»---- - • the County Agent several days ago to dairymen in the northern part of the county, letters have been received at that office' representing nearly four hundred cows, urging that an associa tion be formed in the territory adja cent to Marshfield and North Bend. Following the completion of the asso ciation in the Coquille Valley an at tempt will be made to start testing work in Coos River, Catching Inlet and sections north of the Bay. « A4 I
