FRI0ÀÌ, DBCHMBBR 11. 1931, PAGB EIGHT ■ OUT-OF-DOORS STUFF * Mayor Berg in the Journal Under the head of “Oregon Folks” by Fred Lockley, the special writer on the Oregon Journal, the following concerning Coquille’s mayor appeared in the 8 issue of the Journal. One erior appears in the article. Mr. Lockley did not Tecall that A. H. Powers passed away two years ago. And the origin of the name “Coquille” is a matter subject to argument. Mr. Lockley, in the following, states as a fact that the name was first used be cause of the shells found at the mouth of the river, and be may be right, but it is not definitely known that it was the shells which gave th* Coquill* it* name: J. Arthur Berg as mayor of Co quille, Or. Mr. Berg was born at St. Paul, Minn., on June 4, 1895. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Berg, live at 80 West Terry street, Portland. Mr. Berg attended high school at Shako pee, Minn., after which he landed a job delivering groceries at 82.60 a week. He came to Oregon in 1912. He graduated from the University of Oregon law school in 1921, shortly thereafter locating at Coquille. In addition to his legal business he is I ) interested in the logging business in Coos county. He was a member of the American expeditionary force, serving in France during the World war. He married Florence P. Powers at Marshfield, January 12, 1924. Mrs. Berg to the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Powers of Marshfield. Mr. Powers is a pioneer logger and lum berman of Coos county. Mr. and Mrs. Berg have two children—Patricia, six years old, and Martha Susanne, who is five. Coquille, the county •eat of Coca county, is located on the Coquille river. This river was called by the Indians the Nee-sa-til-cut. The early French trappers called it Coquille river because of the presence of clams and other shellfish at ite mouth, the word “coquille” meaning "shell.” New Cases in Circuit Court Dec. 7—Gladys Ring v*. I have sought to in terview all sportsmen, both old and young, but naturally some have not been interviewed, owing bo the fact that they live out of town or I seldom see them. If any one locally has been overlooked, I wish at this time to as sure you that it has been an over sight on my part There is a brand new feature in the offing for this column and one which I trust you will enjoy. It will bring you again in con tact with all the old sportsmen and I am sure that you are going to en joy it. In the next issue I will go in to detail concerning it I want, and must have, in fact am depending up on the co-operation of every «perta man in this district, in order to put this feature across, I wish to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you who so kindly con tributed to the sports and hobbies that I have been running tot almost a year. Well, here goes the last one of us on the progrm: • “Lans Leneve speaking. My favors ite outdoor sports are hunting and fishing. The outdoor sports that I like to witness are baseball and foot ball. My favorite indoor sports that I enjoy playing are pool and cards. Those I enjoy witnessing are boxing and billards. My favorite shotguns are 20 gauge Winchester, L. C. Smith and Parker 12 gauges. My favorite make of rifle is, for all round shoot ing, a 25-20 Winchester. My favorite brand of ammunition is Remington Kleanbore. My favorite revolver is a 38 special Smith A Wesson. My am bitions are to the complete elminiation of poison bait in every district in the U. 8. and the idea of conservation of wild life taught to the American youth in every channel possible,' in cluding public schools. “My favorite kind of fishing is fly casting. My favorite make of fly is a Red Tag Palmer and my favorite make of spinner is an Al Wilson.” Well, folks, this is “sports and hob bies” signing off and I wish again to thank you one and all for your co operation. Will see you all again concerning our new feature. Though rather tardy, I wish to thank the sender of The Christian Science Monitor for the copy sent me. It contained a beaver story that should have first place in “Wild Life Lines” of Jimmy McCool’s Oregonian column.
