His father was owner of a general mer chandise store and he has two broth ers and three sisters. Mr. Slater was brought up on a farm in Nebraska, but came to Sutherlin, Oregon, with his parents when twelve years of age. He graduated from the High School at Sutherlin and attended O. S. C. Mr. Slater was employed in the office of the California-Oregon Pow er Company, at Roseburg, four years, but upon leaving Roseburg, opened a variety store in Monmouth, Oregon, before coming to Coquille.
