1913, passed away at St. Helens, Ore.,
last Thursday and was buried Tuesday
of this week at Salem.
Mr. Cates came to Oregon in 1909 i
from the east and in January, 1918, ,
bought the Coquille Herald. He then
purchased a half interest in the Sen

partnership with him m the ownership
of the two newspapers, which were
not consolidated. Mr. Cates published
the Sentinel and the Herald waa
leased to Percy Levar, who died some
twelve or thirteen years ago.
In January, 1914, Mr. Cates sold his
interest in the two papers to H. W.
Young, who later bought Mr. Savage’s
interest and in 1917 consolidated the
two papers.
,
Mr. Cates published a paper in
Dallas for a year or so, then one in
St. Helens. After disposing of the
one there he engaged in the motion
picture business until his death.
Mr. and Mrs. Cates made many
