B. & P. W. Club to Meet Sept. 24
“CODE OF SCARLET“
Also Bob
The budget committee of the Port
of Bandon met in the city hall here
Tuesday morning and adopted a pro
posed budget for next year. It con
templates an expenditures of 831,760
next year, of which 812,780 to to be
raised by taxation. One item is fo'
312,500 for the retirement of bonds,
time warrants and interest. It is pro
posed to use $5,000 of it for retiring
warranto and $5,000 will go into 1
sinking fund for bond retirement.
In the afternoon a joint meeting
with the commission pf logging opei
«tors and farmers of the Coquille val
ley was scheduled to be held but H. E.
Hess was the only rancher present.
Several of the loggers were in attend
ance.
The purpoee of the meeting was for
the discussion of Ordinance 23, passed
last month, which provides penalty,
among other things, for blocking the
river with togs.
The land owners
claim this bolds the water back during
a freshet and causes the cutting of
banks and damage to their land.
The loggers advance as their argu
ment that if the togs, during high wa
ter, peas below their holding station
.gbove Fishtrap that many of them
float to sea; that it is an unnecessary
expense to capture and boom them
and bring them back from the lower
river, and that many of the operators
are financially embarrassed if the re
turn of togs up river is delayed until
the freshets subside.
The port commission desires to ful
fill its duties by obeying the wish of
the people «nd the problem is to find
a satisfactory solution which will be
fair to both farmers. and loggers.
When boots were running, blocking
the river was not attempted but the
stretching of cables across the river
last, year was a serious damage to
land along the river, on the opposite
side and up stream.
