Three you? ig men. were taken be

fined $10 api be and costs, amounting
to $3.30 eac
for breaking through
the barricad on the highway Friday
on a trip tbaek from Marshfield by
auto. Going over they wienfc out to
the Wasson ranch and up the logging
.rottd and^uo got through without dis
turbing trie barrier or gietting on the
nfewer pait of the highway.
Coming* back they were stop putrriy
several rJen^ ’.ch the worse , for the
liquor they i
-.onsumed, 'who tore
down th-- ban.cade and commanded
that they be brought to ■'town. The
young men had not intended to vio
late the highway rules And had a
team in readiness to pull them up
the bank where their car .wouldn’t
go under its own power out ;at Cun
ningham but after the road l,iad been
cleared of obstruction they - followed
their unsolicited pas
& the demands
sengers and d rove on into town.
' They paid their fines rather than
fight the case, which.4he

them afterward theyjfoul
¡.cessfully. done. The real offendi .s
were the drunks.
The complaints were made by the
Scandia Co. foreman under orders
from the highway engineer at Marsh
field.

Schools Short of Teachers
Superintendent Mulkey, who ¡8
been gathering data on the teach
vacancies of next year, says that
partial canvass shows (that approxi
mately fifty per cent of the present,
teachers will not return next year.
Marshfield loses 12 out of 33;
North Bend 11 out of 23; Myrtle
Point 8 out of 12. Bandon, Coquille
and Powers have not yet determ >ned I
the number of vacancies, as all of the.i
teachers who expect to return have'
not signed their contracts. On trie
river between Coquille and Bandon/i
at Rivertoln, Pakersburg, Randolph
and Prosper, there are 10 teachers
and only three of the ten are coming
back next year. ,
•
Among the reasons given for not
returning are marriage, further- pre
paration and, leaving the profession
for various reasons.,
greater per
centage of the teachers canvassed
expected to attend the Normal school
than ever before, ■ This will mean a
temporary shortage, but ultimately a
corps of better trained teachers, pro- s
vided they return to Coos county I
when they finish their preparation.

No Exams In Agriculture
County School Superintendent C. E.
Mulkey is in receipt of the follow
ing letter from State Superintendent
Churchill:
“Pupils will not be required to pass
an examination in. agriculture either
in the May or June eighth grade ex
amination. No district of the first
class now teaches the subject of ag
riculture, and the same may be said
of many districts of the second, class.
The result is that the large majority
of teachers going into rural districts
from year to year have themselves
had no ocurse in agriculture. It is
rather absurd to require pupils to
pass an; eramination in a subject in
which the teacher herself has had no
preparation.”
Mr. Mulkey says that there will be
no examination in agriculture in eith
er May or June. The May examina
