Dante scored 16 of his 22 points
in the second half when Oregon
used a 13-2 run to jump start
a 74-60 win over Washington
State in the Pac-12 Conference
opener on Thursday night,
Dec. 1.
The game was played within
four points through the first 26
minutes. TJ Bamba had a dunk
and a three-point play to put
the Cougars on top 44-40. Will
Richardson got those points
back in similar fashion, and af-
ter one last Washington State
lead, the Ducks scored eight
straight points. A Dante layup
gave the Ducks a 53-46 lead
with 11:08 to play.
Starting near the five-minute
mark, Dante scored three quick
baskets, the last two dunks, and
the score was 68-54. The Cou-
gars went six minutes without a
basket, missing five shots with
four turnovers.
Richardson had 17 points
for the Ducks (4-4) and Quincy
Guerrier 12. Richardson had
eight assists and three steals and
Dante had seven rebounds.
Mouhamed Gueye scored 19
points for Washington State (4-
4), which came in averaging 11
3-pointers but finished 3 of 14
behind the arc. Bamba added 14
points, but he missed his only 3,
coming in at 56.5%. Jabe Mul-
lins, a 57% shooter from dis-
tance, missed the game with a
knee issue.
The first half ended dead-
locked at 32 with nine ties and
five lead changes. Almost ev-
ery statistic was a tie, but Gueye
poured in 17 points for Wash-
ington State on 7-of-9 shooting.
No other Cougar had more than
four points.
Gueye only got three shots in
the second half while Dante was
8 of 10 for the Ducks.
Oregon goes to No. 21 UCLA
on Sunday.

CORVALLIS (AP) — Dzmi-
try Ryuny had 14 points, Dexter
Akanno scored the last three
points and Oregon State held off
Washington for a 66-65 win on
Thursday night, Dec. 1 in a Pac-
12 Conference opener.
Akanno converted a three-
point play with 8.2 seconds re-
maining. Keion Brooks missed a
3 for Washington to end it.
Brooks scored on a dunk,
sparking a 15-2 run to give
Washington a 62-61 lead with
2:21 to play, its first since the
14:07 mark in the first half. Ja-
mal Bey’s layup with 40 seconds
left stretched the Huskies’ lead
to 64-61.
Glenn Taylor Jr. made a pair
of free throws for Oregon State
to cut the deficit to 64-63, but
then Brooks split a pair of free
throws for a 65-63 Huskies lead
with 14 seconds left.
Baker outscored Trojans
29-4 in second half
BY JAYSON JACOBY
jjacoby@bakercityherald.com
Baker’s offense had a sluggish start
to the season, but the Bulldogs’ defense
was so stout that the shooting struggles
didn’t matter.
Baker held Homedale to just 12
points, and the Bulldogs’ offense was
much more efficient in the second half
of a 43-12 win in a nonleague girls
basketball game Thursday, Dec. 1 at
Homedale.
Baker led 14-8 at halftime.
Baker coach Jason Ramos said the
Bulldogs were taking good shots, but
most didn’t go down in the first two
quarters.
“I thought we’d come out and be more
efficient on offense,” he said.
Ramos was pleased with Baker’s effort
and performance on defense from the
opening tip.
“We play really good defense, and just
with the personnel we have we’re going
to be tough for teams to deal with,” he
said.
Baker forced 16 turnovers.
Ramos said his message to the team
at halftime was that if they continued to
clamp down on the Trojans in the sec-
ond half, their own shots would start
to fall.
“Defense drives the offense, that was
the halftime discussion,” Ramos said.
The Bulldogs turned his words into
results — and points — in the final two
quarters.
Senior post Jozie Ramos, the reign-
ing Greater Oregon League player of
the year, scored 19 of her game-high 26
points in the second half as Baker out-
scored the Trojans 29-4.
Homedale didn’t score in the fourth
quarter.
“We got the same good looks in the
second half,” Jason Ramos said. “Our
defense just continued to be stellar all
night.”
Jozie Ramos was the only Bulldog
to go to the free throw line, where she
made 7 of 9.
She also had one of Baker’s two
3-pointers. Fellow senior Brooklyn Jaca
had the other.
Makenzie Flanagan had six points,
and Rylee Elms had four.
Baker was scheduled to play host to
Mazama on Friday, Dec. 2 and Klam-
ath Union on Saturday, Dec. 3, but the
schools decided not to travel to Baker
City due to road conditions.

Baker’s Rylee Elms, here in a February 2022 game, had six points in the Bulldogs’ season-opening win at Homedale, Idaho, on Thurs-
day, Dec. 1, 2022.
Ramos said the cancellations were
disappointing.
“We were expecting to play two more
games this weekend,” he said. “We want
to be playing basketball.”
Early season nonleague games are im-
portant as the Bulldogs hone their sys-
tem with a goal of peaking in March in
time for the Class 4A playoffs.

“I couldn’t be more proud of
the way we performed,” Baker
coach Jeris Stephens said.
“We’re really fairly young,
we have six or seven se-
niors. Columbia’s a very good
school, continuously a tough
team out of Idaho. We wres-
tled hard, things just didn’t go
our way.”
Wrestling at 195 pounds,
Baker’s Jacob Mills pinned
Kaden Hanan in one minute,
39 seconds. Stephens said he
would like Mills to drop down

Aldo Duran won in both the
113- and 120-pound brackets.
Ryan Brown, despite wres-
tling at a higher weight class,
defeated Syrus Johnson.
“Essentially he was giving up
10 to 15 pounds against his op-
ponent and came up with a win
for us,” Stephens said.
Stephens said Ben Coburn,
despite losing at 160 pounds,
wrestled well.
“I couldn’t be more proud
of the way he performed,” Ste-
phens said.
