OUTDOORS & REC
Jacoby
Continued from B1
As I trudged back to the
pickup — I had reloaded the
gun, which proves only that op-
timism and incompetence are
bedfellows — I replayed the se-
quence, much as a quarterback
does after throwing the ball
over the head of a wide open
receiver.
I reached no useful conclu-
sion.
I wasn’t terribly surprised, to
be sure.
I’m well acquainted with my
failings as a wingshooter.
But I have brought down
birds — and done so in circum-
stances far less amenable to
success.
I suspect those episodes were
statistical anomalies.
Happenstance, in other
words.
Which is to say, a situation
when luck scores a rare win
over ineptitude.
It’s not dissimilar to a golfer
who smacks a drive down the
middle of the fairway and then
shanks the approach shot into

Even if you come home without any birds, a chukar hunt on the breaks
of the Snake River in Baker County, on a fine November morning, is not
without its attractions.
a lake or someone’s porch win-
dow.
And misses the 2-foot putt
for triple bogey.
The morning’s hunt, despite
its disappointing climax, was
not without highlights.
It was a fine fall morning, the
ground frosty after the recent
passage of a cold front, the sky
clear except for patches of wispy
cirrus.
We saw a couple coyotes,
and while I was hunting alone I
jumped four deer in a draw, one
of them a fine 4-point.
We had roasted chicken for
dinner that evening.
Not quite so satisfying, I sup-
pose, as meat I had procured
myself.
But a cooked chicken thigh,
whatever its questionable ori-
gin, at least has the advantage
of staying still until you pierce it
with a fork.

may be confused about what you are sup-
posed to do and when you are supposed to do
it. You know who to go to for answers.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) -- You can
push things to a new level today, but take care
you’re not asking too much of someone under
your care. You can make an exception.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) -- You’re writ-
ing the rules today, and you can give yourself
the advantage -- but you must do so in a man-
ner that doesn’t stir up controversy.
ARIES (March 21-April 19) -- Though
you fear a certain danger you suspect lies
ahead, someone looking out for you is in a
position to help you if you get into any trou-
ble.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) -- You’re not
very interested in doing what others are eager
to do today, so why not head off in a new
direction? A solo journey can be beneficial.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20) -- You don’t
want to find yourself in over your head today

after going to someone’s aid. Be sure you’ve
taken all possible precautions.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) -- A dramatic
change is in the wind, and you will have to
pay attention to all the little things in order to
avoid the coming storm.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) -- Certain tasks
may prove to be nothing more than busy-
work, but they’re surely preferable to doing
something that would take too much out of
you.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) -- You’re feel-
ing confident, competitive and in the zone
today -- but you may have to wait to engage a
rival in a head-to-head contest.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) -- You may be
expecting an apology from someone at this
time, but it’s not likely to be offered until you
admit you are partly to blame.

YOUR BIRTHDAY by Stella Wilder
Born today, you don’t always provide others
with what they expect from you, or want, or
truly desire -- but what you do give them is
likely more valuable than any of that, though
they may not know it at the time. You are a
difficult person to pin down, the kind to defy
categorizing or “pigeonholing” in any signifi-
cant way -- and certainly the kind to follow
your instincts to personal success and satis-
faction.
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) -- Take the
time to organize both your thoughts and your
efforts today. Doing something out of order
can surely cause you more than a headache.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) -- What
you give to others you’re sure to get back -- if
not today, then tomorrow or the next day.
Your generosity is a beacon.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) -- You
