BAKER CITY HERALD • TUESDAY, MAY 24, 2022 A5 SPORTS Track Continued from Page A3 • Emma Timm competed in the 400, although Cole said her specialty is the 800. “She competed strong at districts and state while learning how to manage the strategy of the race,” Cole said. “It has been fun watch- ing Emma gain confidence with her running.” • Brooklyn Jaca competed in four events and “had a very strong showing in all four,” Cole said. She tied her personal best in the high jump at 4-10, finishing fifth. She also ran well in the 100 and 300 hurdles and ran a leg for the 4x400 relay team that placed third. • Anna Belding qualified for the 400 final by finishing sec- ond in her heat. She was disqualified in the finals for stepping on the lane line too many times, Cole said. “The corners are so short and tight that it is different than what they run the rest of the season,” she said. • Jayden Whitford, a fresh- man, competed in the pole vault, an event she took up just three weeks ago, Cole said. Ian Crawford/Baker City Herald Baker’s Jozie Ramos, shown here competing in the district track and field meet on May 14, 2022, at BHS, placed fourth in the high jump and 12th in the shot put at the Class 4A state championships in Eugene May 20-21, 2022. “While she did not make opening height, she had two very good attempts at it,” Cole said. “She will be back next year.” In addition to Baker’s third- place finish in the 4x400 relay, BAKER TENNIS AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS the Bulldogs’ 4x100 relay team placed 11th, matching a per- sonal record at 52.77 seconds. Relay team members are Belding, Sofia Hanson, Whit- ford and Alexis Conant. Cole said Hanson, a freshman, stepped in for Baeth due to scheduling conflicts. “Sofia stepped up and ran a great leg with very little no- tice,” Cole said. “I was super proud of how she handles it all.” Boys individual results • Thaddeus Pepera finished seventh in the 300 hurdles. • Daniel Brown, a freshman, finished 10th in both the 1,500 and 3,000, setting personal re- cords in both races. “Daniel competed as well as any distance runner I have taken to state in 35 years,” Cole said. “It is so difficult to com- pete when the front kids are so fast that it usually pulls the runners beyond their capacity. But Daniel stuck with his strat- egy and performed very well. He ran two perfect races.” • Tate Powell placed 11th in the discus. “He had a rocky start be- cause his was the first event at the meet, and it wasn’t as or- ganized as well as we would expect,” Cole said. “It was a bit of a rush, but he handled it very well and stayed focused. The discus ring is so different, and some of the athletes did not get a legal throw in. Tate did throw well, and I consider this a good first trip to state for him.” • Malaki Myer competed in the 200 and 400, and was close to qualifying for the finals in both races. “He competed very well, but it just wasn’t in his legs to compete at the top of his abili- ties,” Cole said. • Angel DeArcos competed in the 400 and 800. In the 400, “he ran a very good race, but not quite enough to get to the finals,” Cole said. “He competed well.” • Dash Bloomer competed in the javelin and the 110 hur- dles. “He had three really good throws right at his PR in the javelin, but not quite enough to get into the finals,” Cole said. • Reeve Damschen placed 10th in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet, 6 inches. “I am very excited for how he did,” Cole said. “He had good attempts at 12 feet.” • Baker’s 4x100 relay team — Wyatt Hawkins, Kayden Garvin, Diego Quintela and Malaki Myer — placed ninth. “They competed very well,” Cole said. • Baker’s 4x400 relay team placed seventh, setting a new personal record by three sec- onds. Runners are Wyatt Haw- kins, Diego Quintela, Angel DeArcos and Malaki Myer. “Malaki ran a great anchor leg,” Cole said. “This is such an exciting race.” POWDER VALLEY, PINE EAGLE AT STATE TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS Badger boys 2nd, Pine Eagle boys 6th Lisa Britton/Baker City Herald Baker’s Danny Cunningham finished second in the regional tennis tournament on Saturday, May 14, 2022. OSU’s indoor facility, a new experience for Baker. Bell, who went on to finish third in the tournament, won 6-0, 6-0. “Sarah battled hard but her set scores didn’t reflect it,” Younger said. In a consolation match, Plummer lost 8-0 to Laina Ati- yehn of Stayton. “She played hard and walked off the court very happy with her performance,” Younger said. Baker’s girls doubles team of Maya Smith and Olivia Jacoby played Marin Roseman and Sophia Dube of Oregon Epis- copal in their first match, also on an indoor court. Smith and Jacoby led 3-2 in the first set but couldn’t main- tain their momentum. Another game in the first set went to deuce five times. Roseman and Dube, who went on to win the state cham- pionship, won 6-3, 6-0. Younger said Smith and Jacoby “played very well and fought a great battle.” In a consolation match, also indoors, Smith and Jacoby lost 8-5 to Phoebe Dodson and K Bacho of Philomath. “Again they battled for ev- ery point and game won,” Younger said. She hopes to build on this year’s results for the 2023 sea- son. “This was a great experience for these players and hopefully next year I will get to take more players to state,” Younger said. 2 CORVALLIS — Baker’s four state-qualifying ten- nis players had to adjust to tougher competition, and in some cases to playing indoors for the first time, at the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state champi- onships at Oregon State Uni- versity. Baker didn’t win any matches on Friday, May 20, and no Bulldogs advanced to the final day of the event, Sat- urday, May 21. “The kids fought some tough battles,” Baker coach Amy Younger said. “The set scores don’t always show how good the games are.” In boys singles, Danny Cunningham took on third- seeded Lucas Franssen of Marist Catholic in the first round. Franssen won, 6-2, 6-1. Younger said Cunningham “had some good points and even some games.” In a consolation match, which was played in the pro set format (first player to win eight games), Cunning- ham lost 8-2 to Gage Hurst of North Marion. “I felt he played well and fought hard and hopefully he can go again next year,” Younger said of Cunningham. In girls singles, Baker senior Sarah Plummer also drew the third seed, Bailey Bell of Phi- lomath, in the first round. Bell placed second in last year’s 4A state showcase event.
