BAKER TRACK AND FIELD
Baker girls 1st, boys 2nd at ‘Ray Day’ Invitational
Baker City Herald
Talk about a photo finish.
The Baker girls track and
field team, by the barest of
margins, nipped Pendleton to
win the team title at the “Ray
Day” Invitational meet Friday,
May 6, at the BHS track.
Baker, led by Emma Baeth’s
wins in the 800 and 1,500, and
Anna Belding’s first-place fin-
ish in the 400, amassed 110
points to slip past the Bucka-
roos, who had 109.5 points.
Powder Valley was 12th, and
Pine Eagle 15th.
The Baker boys finished
second behind Pendleton in
the event honoring the late
Ray Uriarte, a longtime Baker
track coach who died earlier
this year.
“Ray Day turned out really
well,” Baker coach Suzy Cole
said. “There were lots of people
and coaches from everywhere
displaying their love for Ray by
wearing Ray Day shirts and/or
sharing stories of how Ray im-
pacted them. Ray was a great
person, coach and friend, who
is deeply missed.”
Pendleton had 127 points,
Baker 105.5.
Powder Valley was third in
the boys meet with 56 points.
Pine Eagle was 16th in the 21-
team event.
The event was something
of a preview for next year, as
Pendleton, now in Class 5A,
will join Baker in the Class 4A
Greater Oregon League.
Cole said she experimented
with putting athletes in some
different events to get a sense
of the best combinations to
maximize the Bulldogs’ scoring
during the GOL district meet,
set for Saturday, May 14, also
at BHS.
“We have lots of opportuni-
ties to have many strong per-
formances,” Cole said. “Team-
wise, we are set up to be a
strong contender on both the
boys and girls side.”
Cole said Jordan Mills and
Daniel Brown had strong
meets, both with personal bests
in the 800, while Mills had a
PR in the 3,000, finishing third,
and Brown had a PR in the
1,500, also finishing third. Ca-
leb Brown of Pine Eagle won
the 800.
Angel DeArcos finished fifth
in the 800, Tate Powell was sec-
ond in the discus with a PR,
and Alex Hobbs had a lifetime
best in the javelin.
On the girls side, Lilly Col-
lins had PRs in the 200 and dis-
cus, and Sofie Kaaen had a PR
in winning the pole vault. Sofia
Hanson had PRs in the long
jump and triple jump.
Cole credited Baker athletes
for dealing not only with occa-
sional rain showers and chilly
temperatures during the Ray
Day meet, but also a malfunc-
tioning timing system.
“I was very proud of those
kids, who were able to with-
stand the weather and meet
issues and still compete hard
and not be distracted by things
they do not have control of,”
Cole said.
