A6 BAKER CITY HERALD • TUESDAY, APRIL 26, 2022 SPORTS BUSY WEEKEND FOR LOCAL TRACK TEAMS Baker girls take 1st, boys claim 2nd at Vale Baker City Herald Led by Emma Baeth’s two individ- ual wins, in the 800 and 1,500, and Anna Belding’s title in the 400, the Baker girls track team won the team title at the Wayne Invitational on Fri- day, April 22, at Vale High School. Baker totaled 104 points to top Mc- Call-Donnelly, Idaho, with 98 points. Nyssa was third with 93. The Baker boys placed second, 13 points behind McCall-Donnelly. Powder Valley placed sixth in the boys team standings, and the Badger girls were 10th. Huntington scored one point in the boys meet and had several competi- tors in both the girls and boys meets. “Despite the constant wind on Friday, we once again competed hard,” Baker coach Suzy Cole said. “Along with us competing tough, as shown by our second place finish on the boys side and the girls winning the meet, we also had lots of per- sonal bests.” “Emma Timm had a fabulous meet,” Cole said. The sophomore ran personal bests in the 1,500 and 800, showing what Cole called an “amazing kick” to fin- ish second in the latter race. Timm also ran a leg in the 4x400 relay, which Baker won. Brooklyn Jaca had personal bests in both hurdle races. “She looks so tough in those events,” Cole said. Lani Pierce had personal bests in the 100 and long jump. Cole said Baeth “ran really smart” in winning two races. “She has the fit- ness and now she is working on the patience and strategy of the races. It is really fun to watch.” Malaki Myer and Wyatt Hawkins each had personal records in the 100 and 200, and Diego Quintela had his best times in the 200 and 400. Thaddeus Pepera was second in the 300 hurdles, setting personal bests in that race and the 110 hurdles. Pepera is the district leader in the 300 hur- dles, Cole said. “Mike Gentry had PRs in the shot and discus, and also is getting more confident in these events every meet,” Cole said. Dash Bloomer won the javelin. “That event is also fundamentally clicking for him,” Cole said. “He is just going to keep getting better.” “We are just having so much fun watching these kids progress,” Cole said. “There is three weeks until dis- tricts. We will be ready.” Davis Carbaugh/The (La Grande) Observer Powder Valley’s Kaden Krieger, second from left, was a three-time winner in a track meet Saturday, April 23, 2022, at Eastern Oregon University, placing first in the 100, 200 and 400.
