The Oregon School Activi- ties Association announced on Wednesday, Feb. 9, that the boys and girls state tournaments will be moved to the Coos Bay area. After Forest Grove requested not to host the event this year, Marshfield and North Bend high schools will be holding the state tournaments. “We’ll travel wherever we need to go in order to play,” La Grande Athletic Director Darren Good- man said. Goodman noted that La Grande teams have often had to travel far for tournament play in the past. The Tigers tied for first in the Greater Oregon League boys standings and were second on the girls side. Baker won the regular season GOL girls title with a 6-0 record. The Baker and La Grande boys tied at 5-1. Forest Grove cited COVID-19 issues as the reason for not hold- ing the tournament, stating that the community has been hit hard by the pandemic. Additionally, OSAA reported that the matchups would likely see a fan restriction at the For- est Grove facilities. Marshfield and North Bend stepped up to host the event, in ad- dition to also hosting the 3A state tournament finals. Pendleton was considered as a top location to host the event, according to OSAA, but there are more schools on the west side of the state that would have to travel to Eastern Oregon. OSAA moves Class 4A basketball tournaments to Coos Bay area BAKER SWIMMING Baker’s Brianna Stadler will have a chance to cap her high school swim- ming career with her fifth and sixth individual state championships. Stadler, a senior, qual- ified for the state meet in two events — the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke. Stadler won the back- stroke at the district meet Saturday, Feb. 12, at Ma- dras, and she finished sec- ond in the butterfly. The state meet is set for Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center in Beaverton. One other Baker swim- mer, Silas Carter, could potentially qualify for state depending on results from other districts, Baker coach Randy Stadler said. Carter placed fifth in the boys 100-yard freestyle at the district meet. “That’s pretty impres- sive, with Silas being a rookie with just three months of training,” Randy Stadler said. Overall, Stadler said he was pleased with Baker’s per- formance at the district meet. “They just swam great,” he said. “It’s a very impres- sive group.” In the girls 100 back- stroke, Stadler finished in 1:00.74, more than 5 seconds ahead of runner up Alyssa Sanchez of Catlin Gabel. In the 100-yard butterfly, Stadler was in the lead un- til the final 25 yards, when virtue of the 43-25 win over La Grande on Feb. 8 in the Baker gym. Baker will play host to the GOL championship game, which affects seeding in the Class 4A state playoffs, on Sat- urday, Feb. 19, at 5 p.m. The opponent hasn’t been decided, but Ramos is antic- ipating a third game against La Grande. The winner of an Ontario vs. Mac-Hi game will play at La Grande on Thursday, Feb. 17, with the winner playing at Baker. Jason Ramos said Baker will prepare this week as usual, but he’ll also look to add plays, on both ends of the court, that the Bulldogs have yet to show this season. If Baker wins Saturday, Feb. 19, the Bulldogs will definitely The 4A boys and girls tournament final rounds are set to be held from March 10-12. The first-round match- ups the week prior will still be held at the higher-seeded high schools. La Grande and Baker teams that qualify for the tournament will likely face a nearly eight-hour drive, as opposed to about four and a half hours to Forest Grove. Boys quarterfinal matchups are slated to be held throughout the afternoon at North Bend High School, while the remaining rounds will be played at Marshfield High School. The 4A boys champion- ship game is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. March 12 at Marshfield High School, according to OSAA. On the girls side, the quarterfinals through championship matchup will take place at Marshfield High School. The girls final is slated for 8:30 p.m. March 12 at Marshfield. Marshfield is a 4A school that will likely qualify for the state tour- nament on both sides, with its boys team currently standing at 17-4 and the girls team at 15-6. Host schools typically do not play in the tour- nament, which is a concern OSAA Executive Director Peter Weber ad- dressed in the release by OSAA. “Obviously, it’s not an ideal sit- uation,” Weber told John Gunther of The World newspaper in Coos Bay. “We’ve had it come up in a few other circumstances.” Forest Grove was previously slated to host the 3A and 4A volleyball tournaments in the fall, but the tour- naments were moved to Corvallis. First-round matchups of the 4A OSAA playoffs are set to begin on March 4 for boys and March 5 for girls.
