TROUT
SHOWS

“Take this,” I said. “It’s working.” And
before I walked up to the bridge, I pointed
out where I supposed the trout were lying
in the tea-colored water.
But I couldn’t leave. I had to watch from
the bridge to see what the trout were doing.
Taking care to not cast my shadow over the
fi sh, I leaned both elbows on the rail and
watched the angler work out line and swing
the Muddler across.
A trout streaked up from the middle
of the water column, followed a couple of
feet and closed its mouth over the deer hair
streamer. There was no reaction from the
fi sherman. He let the fl y continue to swing
while the trout moved with the fl y then
opened its mouth and spit it out.
In 20 casts, 10 trout grabbed and the guy
did not a single time sense the bite. I could
not stand it. I walked back down.
He was ready to change fl ies.
“You’re getting bit on almost every
cast,” I said. He didn’t believe me but he
cast again. When the fi sh bit, I called the
strike. He caught a fi sh. I left him to it.
What was the diff erence, I wondered
then, and still wonder today when I fi sh
alongside someone who clearly catches
more fi sh than me. If the fl y is the same
and the presentation is the same, why does
one angler catch fi sh and another does not?
How many fi sh bite and we do not know it?
Line control and sensitivity is hard to
teach and even harder to learn.
Let’s call it electricity, an impulse in a
conductor. Cast out a dead thing; the con-
They’re the gun that won

That made for a beau-
tiful picture with the brass
lever action laid on the cin-
namon bear.
If you need some décor
for a mountain cabin, I
don’t know how you could
do better than hit a gun
show and grab a box full
of old school ammo boxes
to set up on a shelf. I saw
a guy that had a whole
box of old ammo boxes
for sell today.
Usually at every gun
show I can fi nd at least one
deal on a couple of boxes
of ammo that I need. But
one word of caution. I’d
advise against buying any
ammo reloaded by some
individual local. Years ago
I bought some at a Nampa
Gun Show and it nearly
blew the fi ring pin back
through the end of the
bolt. It was protruding out
the back of the bolt. Little

ductor swings out in the void. And then,
out of the void comes a live thing and
closes the circuit. For a moment, the line
tingles. Energy pulses from the trout on
the other end. In tune with the lightning
rod, the graphite in your hand, you sense
it. Exchange of energy. Reaction making
contact.
Let the fi sh take a bit of line. Lift the rod
or turn the tip toward the bank. Let the trout
hook itself. It’s electric.

If you want some old ammo boxes to decorate your mountain
cabin look no further than your local gun show.
only buy reputable ammo.
One thing that I really
like to stumble upon is a
unique local dealer. One
year at the La Grande
gun show I met a guy
that sold imported knives
from Finland. They were
unique. The handles were
made out of reindeer
horns. He had a mush-
room knife that had boars’
bristles on the end of the
handle to brush dirt off of
your mushrooms as you
gathered them.
The other day I met a
young man named Justin
who owns Dakota Prairie
Ammunition. They man-
ufacture ammo of course.
I’m going to be testing
some of his ammo. I love
helping guys that are just
getting their feet on the
ground and many times
you’ll be able to meet a
new fl edgling company at
your local show.
I’m sorry, I don’t have
a list of upcoming local
shows but I’ve heard that
the Pendleton show is
on March 13-14 and also
heard a rumor that the La
Grande show is being held
on the same dates.
So don’t just set around
the cabin bored this
winter. Get out and hit a
gun show. If nothing else I
always see a few old-time
books that I can’t pass on.
Have fun.

YOUR BIRTHDAY by Stella Wilder
Born today, you are a natural student of the
world around you, one who learns by doing
and by carefully observing the behavior of
those you see. It may take quite some time for
some lessons to be learned, but once learned,
they stay learned, and you use them well as
building blocks of a solid, righteous and
egalitarian world view.
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 13
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) -- You may
have to decide between two options you
would rather avoid altogether -- but circum-
stances today require you to do what is hard.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) -- In keeping
yourself safe, you are also keeping others safe
as well. Now is no time to throw caution to
the wind, tempting as it may be.
ARIES (March 21-April 19) -- You’ll want
to dig deeper than usual today in order to
come up with the answers that will liberate
you from a situation you did not create.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) -- You can
find meaning in things that others overlook
or ignore entirely. Today, much that happens
will steer you in a new direction.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20) -- Now is not
the time to give up on something you’ve long
considered important. Play your cards right
today, and it can be yours indefinitely.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) -- You may
find it more difficult than expected today to
continue following another down a certain
familiar path. It’s time to make a change.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) -- You have more to
do at this time than you may realize, but piece
by piece the big picture is likely to reveal itself
to you today.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) -- You should
be able to avoid personal conflict with ease
today -- unless someone you know continues
to push your buttons and demand a reaction.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) -- You must be
sure that jealousy plays no part in what
should be a busy and complex day. You can
celebrate another’s good fortune instead!
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) -- You can
learn a thing or two from someone who has
walked the path you are eager to explore.
Soon you’ll be ready for your own journey.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) -- You
should be able to sample freely all that is or
will soon be available to you. The decision
you make today will help shape the days to
come.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) -- You can
claim to be lucky or you can claim to be
capable, but the truth is that you are both and
what happens today will prove it.
